similar to the "political stance" thread but on specific things that you believed when you were young until you were exposed to things that changed your mind

I'll start
-academia is filled with intelligent people
-more diversity results in less racism
-the news is supposed to inform people

That the government is against me. That academic pursuits are not worth it.

I feel sorry for you if actually ever believed the last 2 lol.

And yes, academia is filled with intelligent people, but even smart people can hold dumb political beliefs. I have many family members who hold retarded conservative views and they're all intelligent and successful. But I'm better than labeling them dumb because of their political positions (No matter how cringy or downright false)

religion is just a form of social control
if people believe their actions have long lasting consequences, they will refrain from being bad
or if they believe in some nonsensical "afterlife" and that jesus is gonna wrap them in his arms and you get to see all your dead relatives and 99 virgins and milk and honey etc..
their tiny little minds will be at ease

- That all cultures are different but at the end of the day are equal.
- That free immigration is perfectly fine if we just abolish the nanny state.

I would say the majority of people in academia are not exceptionally intelligent

If you were an extremely intelligent person with a masters in engineering, would you be an engineer and get paid to design great things or would you teach engineering?

Sure there are many intelligent academics but it is definitely not the norm. "Those who can't do, teach."

You've grown out of such beliefs, or are you sating your beliefs?

Well IMO you're just switching goalposts. First you say not intelligent then add in exceptionally intelligent. I would agree but that's kind of how the world works - exceptionally intelligent people are a small minority. But just being able to teach at a college puts you ahead of most of the population.

I thought I wouldn't have to watch any more porn when I am married.
Oh boy was I wrong.

Taxation is the price we pay to live in a civilized society. And that government is necessary in general.

That people are, for the most part, honest and good.

Indeed. The only thing worse than a bigot is bigot who thinks they are being clever.
I'm just trying to avoid the dreaded dubble dubs.

Please, do tell me the bigotry of my statement; an insidious claim with no explaination is something I would expect from Fawlty but not you.
