8 Men Now Own Half The World's Wealth

And they are the same guys funding all the universities to teach me about how privileged I am.

What strange times when most of them are leftist... Practice what you preach anyone?

None of them are "leftists." Just moderate liberals who support maintaining a market economy with a safety net and some measures to ensure opportunity for poor kids--and two of them at least have, indeed, been extremely charitable.

3 extremely charitable -- you have to assume buffet is one of the six.

Ask Zuckerburg or Bezos about income inequality. These guys say theyre liberal but are complete cut throat capitalists. I never understood that with silicon valley.
That's how it works.

It's like yoga people who are all about love and understanding until a dollar bill falls on the floor.

It is just greed and the story that makes the greedy feel better about themselves.

Off topic mod, I am having real issues typing on this site with an iPhone.

ANyone else have that problem?

Please use the support forum for that. I'm not having issues though

Great. Feels good.

The only way to truly solve "wealth inequality" by definition is through pure socialism.

If however, the ACTUAL problem is poverty, as suggested above, there are ways we can solve that without setting fire to the western world
I'm with this. 8 fellas won the big Monopoly game. Good on em. But could we please just have guaranteed basic healthcare?

If the 8 richest individuals on earth obtained 1/2 the wealth that exists on earth ( i.e, over 100 trillion dollars), I would definitely be concerned :).

Then if the current system is allowed to continue, unabated, perhaps your children and/or grandchildren will have the honor of being "concerned".

I never understood this way of thinking.

Many of the rich didn't get it handed to them. They came from places just like most of us did. The world isn't "everybody gets a participation ribbon". They hustled just harder than the rest of us.

So a couple rich guys have the equivalent of 4 billion poor people having $106 each......

AND????

It's pretty clear why discussion of global wealth disparity goes nowhere with most: Few have the moral or spiritual capacity to recognize "the other" and empathize with him or her as fully human.

"So a shit-ton of dark skinned, third-world poors don't have as much money as a handful of the world's richest men... Sounds about right. Yawn..."

Discussions about wealth and income inequality get more traction among Americans when the talk is limited to the disparity that exists in the US alone.

So, something like 25 of the richest Americans own as much as the bottom half of all Americans collectively.

Concerning? Or just an encouraging indication that the American Dream is alive and well?

No, I don't think it's inherently unethical to use intangible goods others have produced without their consent.

Imagine if the first caveman to make fire got a patent, and all the other cavemen had to pay him woolly mammoth legs to use his technique?

The distinction here is between an infringement or replication undertaken for one's own, personal use.

(Like, I see some new-concept mouse trap in the hardware store and, rather than buying it to deal with my rodent problem, I just build one at home based on the same principle.)

And going into business manufacturing a product for which I do not own the patent, in order to profit financially.

I say this as a former patent holder. IP protections are essential to innovation. And particularly essential to the ability of "the little guy" to start a business that's bringing a new product into the marketplace.

Wait, as a matter of reference do you also consider yourself a moderate?

Very odd response.

"Why do they act like moderate liberals, profess moderate liberal beliefs, and claim to be moderate liberals when they're extremists?"
"Um, because they're moderate liberals."
"Do you think you're a moderate liberal?"

Huh? I never claimed they were extremists, are you confusing me with someone else?

The term "leftist" connotes extremism as does the suggestion that simply being rich is not "practicing what they preach."
