Zookeeper Gabe's Animal Thread V7.0

My wife is the chair of biology and chemistry at a local university. They recruited an administrator from a nearby animal sanctuary to come and teach at the college. The ulterior motive was that they wanted his help putting together a zoo science major that trains people to work in zoos.

He now works at a local zoo and teaches part time. But he's our in for animal encounters. For Father's Day last year, my wife scored me an encounter with a serval kitten. She was so cute, but not overly interested in me, though she licked my bald head. He fosters her at night. We would be in on that too, but we have cats, and he thinks it might cause issues.

So, instead, we foster a two toed sloth 2-3 days a week. She is my movie buddy and watched rogue one with me Friday night, though her movie night was cut short because it was Day 7 of her poop schedule and I felt her arching into me and I thought she would explode. Damn, they are so cute. I pick her up in the police cruiser, and I am pretty sure that makes me the only sloth unit in the world, though she sucks at tracking suspects and takes a week to do a vehicle sniff.

Sloths were not created for PoPo work, they are on the other side.

p.s. as @Anung Un Rama said, jelly af.

Like I said, their tracking ability sucks. But their bite is on point. They bite really hard
do they bite aggressively? Is it safe to keep one as a pet?

I keep seeing this image over and over:

They just recently found out that fang blenny venom targets the same receptors that opiates target.
In the journal Current Biology, researchers have revealed what makes the fang blenny’s venom so unique: It’s packed with opioid peptides, which target opioid receptors, much like heroin and morphine do in the human brain. Unlike with snakes or stingrays or the lionfish, the venom doesn’t incapacitate the victim with pain. Instead, it sends the fish’s blood pressure plummeting, messing with its coordination and giving the blenny a chance to escape.

Unfortunately no as well. I'm presuming he is explaining how wide they can open their mouth and the pressure of their bite force via showing that the watermelons being crashed so easily.

I don't like how he handled what I'm presuming to be his pet. Extremely cool spider though.
This is the same guy, I guess he breeds all sorts of critters. Those orchid mantis are amazing (never heard of them before)

I have seen them in the Reptile/Insect parks in my country during my middle school trip. I looked them up every 2 years or so when my interest for Mantis resurface. Mantis is definitely my favorite insects. Cool as hell and I love the way they get their food.

They're not that expensive. There was a guy selling them at MACNA a couple years ago for $125 and that included a cage and other stuff.

What's MACNA? I don't know if I'd want an insect for a pet, but if I did it would be a mantis.

Gabe, tree roos don't eat mantis do they?

It's a huge saltwater aquarium trade show. You get to see all the new crazy coral and fish. There's usually a booth or two with the new crazy non aquarium exotic pets. I've always wanted a giant grass hopper but they're hard to find and expensive when you do.

Sounds very cool. I'll look out for the next one that comes my way.

125 is pretty expensive for a pet that only lives 1 year.

Google to see if there's a specialty saltwater store near you. You can see some really neat stuff.

@bad seed You can find them for $50-$60 online. That $125 included everything needed except the food to care for them.
I bred killifish for awhile. They only live 6-9 months but people would pay $60 for a pair and I couldn't breed them enough
