Nature & Animals Zookeeper Gabe’s Animal Thread Vol 10.0

Manatees seem to be to water what the Sloths is to land.

These seemingly harmless creatures harbouring a deep, deep, secret.

Here is a person filming from the 1st perspective how terrifying it is to have a sloth, similar to a zombie, chasing you down!!!

can't see how some find these adorable.

they give me the fn creeps

I pretty much love all our animal and insect brothers. You see people upthread horrified by seeing an oddity insect where i just want a chance to see them all in their natural environment.

I am not big on touching and handling anything that is not domesticated, with few exceptions, as i do not believe in humans forcing contact. My basic rule, and the one i taught my kids is that if you reach 80% of the way towards an animal or insect and it will not come the remaining 20% of the way to make contact with you... do not force contact.

That goes for domestic dogs too. If the dog does not come up and make contact, you outstretch an open hand, palm up, and allow the dog to close the distance and touch the hand. Most will. The ones who will not... do not force it.

Unpopular opinion perhaps but dugongs are the cuter cousin of manatees.

I get annoyed if I see people trying to touch wild animals. If that animal attacks them, that's just the darwin awards.

People think of animals as playthings. If you approach a random person and start touching them with no warning it wouldn't be a surprise if he starts throwing uppercuts. Even domesticated animals like dogs are the same. I always try to read their body language and if they're cool with me petting them. I always stretch out a closed fist though and let them sniff it. If they bite, I figure a fist would have less surface area for them to bite and hold onto so it'd be easier for me to pull out.

Anyone have experience buying/selling on Morphmarket?

eBay isn't going to allow live fish and aquatic invert sales on their site anymore. It looks like a lot of sellers will be switching over to Morphmarket.
Lots of my friends use it for herps, just check reviews of the sellers. It’s a very well done product, I’ll probably start using it for geckos at some point.

Also known as the manatee?
I have watched probably as much animal documentary shows as any one on this planet.

As a kid i could not get enough on any animal or insect and i am surprised i do not ever recall hearing the term Dugong prior? Did i forget or are they generally just called Manatees (accurate or not) when on these shows?

I find it hard to believe i have not seen the actual animal in a show prior, so this one does baffle me a bit.

They are from the same order but not closely related, one of the main differences is the tail. The tail on a dugong is fluked (like a dolphin almost) while a manatee is paddle shaped.
That's why I was surprised the song in the video said "Also known as the manatee."

Dugongs and manatees are two separate species. They're just one of those animals that don't have the best PR team I guess.
I first heard of them in 2020 because a huge group of them were found off the Persian Gulf when ship movements were reduced. I also they were manatees but found out they were a separate species. Even in regions where they live, they're not that easy to run into. I've only see them a few times over the years totally by coincidence.

I guess unlike manatees, which are more limited to brackish coastal waters, dugongs swim out into the ocean sea so they have a wider range of movement. Along with them being vulnerable that's my guess as to why they're not as easily seen.

I looked them up to check what exactly the habitat range of dugongs and manatees is like, and I'm surprised to find that manatees go all the way down to brazil. And that there's a sperate Amazonian manatee and a west African manatee? And "our" manatees are actually called the West Indian Manatee? WTF

Cam across this fellow. Get a wide range of wallybys kangaroos etc here. Have a few almost jet black wallaroos. Greys most common few big boys rarely rhe reds.

This fellow was exceptionally pale and little... almost fluffy his tail is one of the oddest ive seenView attachment 1083669View attachment 1083670View attachment 1083671
That is a curious looking one. I do think the proportions are roolike and I would guess it’s just a young grey going through an awkward teenage hairstyle.
