That "fake athlete" won the UFC heavyweight title and defended it the record number of times.

I wonder if you consider Sakuraba a "fake athlete" as well.

Brock is a better athlete than pretty much every other athlete in the UFC that failed at reaching the elite levels of other sports they played in their younger years.

Sakuraba had a reputation to be in work matches. Whether he knew or not is another question.
