The other day I was thinking about what initially got me interested in Martial Arts. I grew up around boxing, before that I was a huge pro wrestling fan as a kid... But even before that, there was this

That's right, Mortal Kombat. The intergalactic fighting tournament arcade game pitting mortals against ninjas, cyborgs, and demons from other realms. The clash of styles, the kicks, the sweeps, the flashy combinations. I can safely say that Mortal Kombat is the origin of my interest in Martial Arts.

Honourable mention to Street Fighter as well.

What say you Sherdog? Can you pin point you initial interest in spinning shit?

It was probably Bruce Lee,and then Bloodsport...Ninja turtles...etc.

Bruce Lee got me interested in martial arts.

TUF 3 got me hooked on MMA. I had seen it before TUF 3 but only watched it as a sideshow to see guys get knocked the hell out.

Inb4UFC1fans.

From a kid you got all the classic karate kid shizzle and then kick boxer with van damme and roadhouse, then I guess an interest in marital arts via history etc
Then I did tae kwon do as a teen
Then actual sport I found late one night Muay Thai on tv and then another night pancrase

always interested in martial arts. fighting games, ninja movies all that. my dad used to rent the old UFC tapes when i was young when it had logo with guy on it

after growing up and getting on the internet and youtube became a thing I would search up boxing, kickboxing and then MMA. old pancrase fights, pride and of course UFC highlights. i remember first learning about fedor I couldnt believe how much of a badass he was. and it really carried on from there and slowly after time I just became a huge fan of the sport and followed it completely.

My friend at the time made me watch UFC 70 with him and then I was in forever

street fighter was cool because i was genuinely interested in the martial arts styles the fighters used. I never had heard of capoeira before that game, which was blanka's style, for example.I think i also wondered if people could really use chi powers like hadokens and so on ( i think i was 11 or 12 when the game came out)

Saw UFC 5 with buddies on PPV.
Then watched earlier UFC's and became a BJJ fanboy.
Loved the (now forgotten) premise that whomever finished the fight was the winner.

I used to explain to people that just because Royce was on the bottom did not mean he was losing.
The Unified Rules ruined all this to a large extent.

TUF 1 marathon on Spike tv one saturday or sunday before the TUF 1 finale

Chris Leben's strange brew got me interested, yea i said it

Haha sweet. Those VHS's are so cool looking!

Bloodsport for sure.
Then Roy Jones Jr, and Sugar Shane Mosley make me love combat sport.
After GSP brought me to the UFC.

80's/early 90's movies. Boxing as a kid. Then wrestling practice instead of watching tape, our coach pops in a video of Mark Shultz destroying Gary Goodridge. I have been interested ever since. Then while in Iraq all we could watch if we have had time and a tv available was afn. There was either football or mma on. Oh and I watched some pride while I lived in Korea. Became a hardcore fan when I went to college. Couple of dudes ordered the ppv and I have followed intently ever since then. 2006 is when the casual part was officially dropped. Kept in shape by going to a gym and that added to my love.

Watching real people fight for real, for enough money to buy a truck, to pay some debts to be real.

Seeing people fight for money for food, to pay trainers. To live.

I seen this in 2003.

yeah they are. also people saying van damme, hell ye. bloodsport was amazing when i watched as a kid, havent seen it in a very very long time though. and sonny Qc that's kind of what happened with me as well. watched roy jones jr video and highlights on the internet, and prince naseem hamed and of course mike tyson and older generation boxers. and also when I watched andy hug highlights my mind was blown that guy was epic. and then after getting some what into MMA and finding out about GSP I was hooked.
