A while back I was out with my friend, his girlfriend, and one of her friends at a bar to have a few drinks. I was tired so I went home early. The next day I met up with my friend and he told me there was some drama at the bar after I left and his girlfriend was upset at him. Apparently some drunk dude hit on his girlfriend, she of course rejected him, and he got pissy and called her a cunt, which ensued in a heated shit-talking match between douchebag and my friend’s girlfriend, with her friend backing her up. The trouble between my friend and his girlfriend started because instead of “defending her honor” or whatever, my friend tried to calm both parties down. He took the friendly approach to de-escalation and his girlfriend and her friend accused him of not sticking up for her and trying to be “friends” with a guy who insulted his girlfriend. The douchebag in question apparently told my friend that he insulted his girlfriend because he had to “defend his pride.” In the end nothing more came out of it except my friend had a girlfriend who was angry with him until the next day.
I wondered what would be the wisest way to handle this sort of situation. I believe a perceived insult or offensive is purely up to perception, unless it’s physical, and getting angry at such things is pointless. I wouldn’t let somebody piss me off by simple words, especially in a bar by a random drunk dude. So I don’t think my friend’s girlfriend should’ve gotten mad, but I also understand that most people react when insulted. As for the drunk guy, I think it takes a fragile ego to get pissed off by a rejection from a random chick, but people like that exist. Not sure what my friend could’ve done or what I should in a similar situation that “protects my woman’s honor” without it escalating into physical violence. When somebody tries to start shit with me personally, I just ignore them or try to troll them for my own amusement. But this tactic might still leave my girlfriend/wife upset if she was the target of douchebaggery.
I never had to deal with this so far but I think my immediate tactic would be to get the guy to go away and if she’s upset, explain to her how useless it is to get upset by something like that. But then again who knows, if it was my girlfriend, I might have gotten angry enough to fill the room with uppercuts.
I am not sure how I would deal with this situation so I wondered, “What would Sherdog do?”
Cliffs:
1. Dude gets shitty at your girlfriend for rejecting him
2. Your girlfriend gets shitty for dude getting shitty
3. Throw teh jab or uppercut?
