Tried to register for an IBJJF recently, but I got promoted to purple since my last comp. Turns out I have to pay a $40.00 registration fee to do this. When did they change the rule? It used to only be brown and black belts had to pay to register with IBJJF, right?

edit: I realize everyone pays for each tournament they enter, but that to register with IBJJF as a purple belt now costs money is what i'm referring to.

I don't know, but I am not surprised. In Brazil it is every belt and I am sure it is their plan here too.

Did anyone actually think they were gonna leave all the purple, blue, white money on the table?

Are they requiring instructor signature as well?

yeah that their way of keeping track of the two year rule..
Im stuck in that took when i changed teams they wouldn't allow me to change it so im still listed under my old organization until i get promoted again. im not paying 35 to change the name of the school and then another 40 to change the belt color a little while later.

White is wear the real money is at, considering all the people that sign up, are gung ho for a few months, and then quit. So much as they don't charge too much for the registration fee (i.e. $40 seems a bit steep for white belt, but $20 seems reasonable), all too many newcomers would hand over their money to be "officially" recognized by the IBJJF as a practitioner.

And to compete at black you have to pay $400 and take a referee's course? Is that right? I would never do that.

IBJJF is garbage, so glad i don't compete under their banner anymore, i'd rather sit on my ass and save my money.

Currently it's $35/year to compete at black ($40 if it's your first time because you never competed at brown).

I am a black belt and thus familiar with the process.

What, you guys thought that registration drama wasn't gonna trickle down?

Basically, the issue here isn't 50 bucks. It's that if you try IBJJF at blue, like it and want to stay, you have to switch to someone that's paid up to get them to recognize your purple.

I've never had that problem and never had to pay a membership fee so far all the way through purple.

It's new. They started by giving all black belts free registration, no questions asked. Then they raped the next generation. When we complained, there were a ton of black belts that could say, hey, we never had that problem. Then it hit brown, with older browns not having any issue, and now purple. These are jiujitsu men. They play business like it was jiujitsu. Lets say you buy into an IBJJF mentality at blue, but your coach isn't registered and promotes you to purple. You get kicked out dude.

I get that it's a business and they're in it to make money. $40 is a relatively small fee to pay....I just wasn't aware that they'd changed the rule. I'm lucky enough to train at a place that's affiliated, but I can see where it'd be frustrating to not be able to compete. Really though, how many schools aren't affiliated properly to sign off on a belt promotion?

Lots of schools don't have affiliation packages.

I guess the mundials gold spot just opened up for someone else now that you dropped your spot. Do you think you will lose any of your sponsorships after giving up on the mundials???

How many?
Not sure. But why would it matter?

Ibjj events are for ibjjf members.

The people that trains bjj and choose to charge money to teach bjj have a choice to make. Be with the ibjjf or not. They are many others federations and competition fornats available.

I think there a lot of misconceptions about this whole thing. It's really not that big of a deal. Take my teammate and I.

My teammate, Mike Harmon is a black belt under Dave Ginsberg (a Mario Sperry black belt). My instructor is under Marco Barbosa.

Both of them just never bothered to get IBJJF certified (Ginsberg is now).

When we did our paperwork, a friend at our gym signed off for us. And the IBJJF KNOWS that the person who signed off didn't promote us, because our paperwork included who promoted us and the dates (our coaches).

It's just a weird technicality. I think it's silly, but not this huge deal people make it out to be. We paid our $40, got our card fairly quickly, and started competing. In fact, Mike won No-Gi Worlds.

If you want to compete in IBJJF, most people find a way, however I'm sure there are outliers. I know organizations like the Jiu-Jitsu Brotherhood have helped individuals get their paperwork signed off on when they were having trouble.

One of my instructors Noh Young-ahm in Korea got his club IBJJF affiliated recently. It didn't cost thousands of dollars. It was a simple, straight forward process ( according to him).

Competing in France as a white belt was a bigger deal.

I had to provide a doctor's note saying I was healthy enough to compete. This was seperate from the doctor's note saying I was healthy enough to join a BJJ club. Then, I had to fill out the paperwork and pay money for my card just to compete as a white belt!! When in Rome....
