You dont block a headkick with a single arm block

MMA sparring gloves exist too. Padded mma gloves.
Agree. I'm just wondering how they integrate those things into training to avoid bad defensive habits that could develop by wearing gloves so much bigger and differently shaped than fight gloves. Like is it normal to say, "Only MMA gloves in the 6 weeks prior to fight?"

Or would it simply be normal to not worry about that? Just legitimately curious.

Maybe that's true, but I wouldn't put much stock in him remembering anything a quarter second before being knocked out. Maybe he saw it and intentionally blocked the way he did, but he forgot afterward because, you know, he got kicked in the head.
One arm blocking is better than no arm he wasnt in a kickboxing sparring where you can do everything perfectly its mma in the heat of the moment

Pretty much all Poirier's defense is boxing based. He blocked the prior headkicks that didn't KO him the same way as well.

Yup, which isn't really surprising since he's been fighting boxers & grapplers for most of his UFC career, Pettis is the only decent kicker he's fought in ages.

Didn’t Oliveria kind of do the same thing vs Dariush? Didn’t get the KO but led up to it

I have seen other MMA fighters do this as well. You dont block a full force head kick with a single arm block.

Lean back, duck, or block with a solid to arm block.

<6>

Considering how close Gaethje was (and Poirier’s own comment after the fact) it appeared as though it was completely unexpected/undetected by Dustin.

Cung Le taught Frank Shamrock that back in the day. By breaking his arm.

Justin threw a jab and then a cross. Dustin thought the jab is a faint to the cross but a high kick came with it. Usually fighters don't throw a same side kick after a same side punch. Mirko Mark Hunt in K1 or Leon Usman is the same strategy.

But I will email Dustin your advice

Wasn't even a jab and 6 people liked it....sherdog, doesn't even know the most basic punch

Point well taken, Frode but what you said won’t be to well received because you out of all people should know not to criticize or critique fighters who’s jock strap you couldn’t hold on your best day.

Dustin probably didn’t even see it coming because it wasn’t telegraph and he was worried about other weapons coming at other targets.

Funny just rewatched it and there were no punches lmao
Justin just weirdly positioned his right hand and threw the kick in a way Dustin didn't expect it. I didn't pay attention. In Europe that was at like 4 in the morning.

In any case the point stands that Dustin didn't know a head kick is comming. He's not too stupid to block a high kick properly.

OK what basic punch was it ? There was none
You didn't see it right too. You saw a imaginary punch too. He just positioned his hand and didn't even throw any punch before the head kick.

it’s his mindset. the same reason why he always jumps guillotine when he never is successful with it and giving away position.
he overestimates himself.
He goes into fights overestimating himself.
Just like his hot sauce? Or is the hot sauce any good?

Maybe but the kick was pretty well hidden behind a straight. Going back and rewatching the fight it looks like Justin was setting it up, throwing straights in round 1 and seeing Dustin’s reaction, training him to parry with his rear hand and duck behind his shoulder/elbow for the left hook he’d throw afterward.

you should also never let your opponent hit you in the head but it happens because its fighting and not pro-wrestling

You can just be a sherdogger. Nobody is tall enough to kick you besides other sherdoggers.

Wtf is this shit? How are you a pro fighter?

Maybe u were drinking when u wrote this

He never expected Gaethje to even attempt that kind of kick. Credit to Gaethje for improving yet again. I thought his improvements were overrated before this fight. I cant deny it anymore. That was all planning and execution.
