It was from a botched sunset flip which isn't a Strong Style thing. Years of abuse probably didn't help, I'm sure being 50 was a factor as well.

Awful news. Another legend of the squared circle who refused to hang 'em up while he had time. I'm watching Misawa vs Samoa Joe right before Misawa's death in the ring, and noneother than the Hawtness himself is on commentary. These guys make real sacrifices, shows the heart that Takayama brought to the ring against Don Frye in their legendary slugout.

Every takayama figth is must watch he rushed in full speed ahead against prime sapp that was when sapp was still doing his NFL lineman stance and bull rushing takayama met him head on end up eating some of the must brutal gnp I've ever seen what made it worse was takayama wasnt really defending was trying to punch from the bottom the whole time
The crowed was hot for his fight vs Fujita I think he was the overwhelming crowd favorite in all of his fights fujita was getting a huge push from new Japan around this time aswell takayama was doing well ended up getting subbed And of course refused to tap
Vs schilt His gameplan was to stand and bang I was a bit bummed this was the last figth of his I watched he straight face planted I started getting in jmma around 2003 after takayama had his last figth vs sapp for yrs I would hope he'd be on a card I know he was made into a bit of a meme around here before the word meme even existed but ppl legit wanted him to be in gps on cards i never got to see one of his fights live on ppv or stream I did ended up ordering a best of VHS of his pro wrestling career turned out he was a heck of wrestler
Frye takayama everyone knows I seen that so many times I remember individual ppls reaction in the audience just one thing takayama was known for his suplexes in pro wrestling he had the best German in the business anyways at the end of frye takayama he goes for a belly to belly suplex u can hear the crowd about to go nuts as he goes for it and a collective sigh as he just ends up in mount and eventually pounded out
Around this time Japanese prowrestling was beginning to tank mainly due to pride and the Japanese pro wrestler getting owned in mma crossover matches but takayama after going 0-4 actually got a rub got a a couple of belts challenged for some in big matches ppl just loved him

Strange that there is no video since it supposedly happened in a live match.
Also weird that supposedly this incident occurred the first week of May but it just finally got released by the major news sources (the only news reports in May just vaguely said that he got injured during the DDT tour and that he wasn't going to finish the tour).
This is terrible. 3 months after the injury and he's conscious but unable to talk/eat
