Been looking for a dog for a few months.
I'm vacillating between my previous breed, the Dogue de Bordeaux (French Mastiff):

Love this breed. They are so perfect for me I think I must've have been one in a previous life. But... they only live about 5 years. That is a pretty brutal cycle. Probably why I haven't gotten a new dog is so long (about 3-4 years).

And the Boerboel (South African Mastiff) - mainly for life expectancy (a more serious breed than the DDB, but very similar).

just look at that gorgeous creature (150lb) can get up to 200lb. Not usually a fan of brindle, but this is the most perfect dog I've ever seen.

I might put in an application for his offspring in a few months. Unless I pull the trigger on a mini havapoo

edit: major ish is that neither of these breeds have a reputable breeder within 3-4 states of me.

And yeah, the life expectancy of many bigger breeds is a heart breaker. I'm sticking to medium sized mutts from now on. Well, after our ancient Pom that refuses to die kicks the bucket.

One of my old housemates used to have a mastiff x Rhodesian ridgeback (who still thought he was a lapdog), and he used to leave a permanent, solidified half inch layer of drool on the back glass door.

the back of my suv still has drool scars from my guys hanging out the back window.
Sometimes when they shake their heads you can here it hit the wall and hope you can find it before it cakes. And they shed pretty good, too. Not a fan, but the pros outweigh those cons (that is for the DDB, the Boerboel doesn't shed or drool as much).

We have a large gay population since Mandela? What? As the resident spokesperson for the HIV capital of the world, here's the rough hierarchy of HIV infection in South Africa:

1. Children
2. Women
3. Gay men
4. Straight men

A little under half of the children in this country are HIV positive. And about a quarter of all women. A fifth of all gay men and about a sixth of straight men. Even if you assumed that all of those straight men are "gays on the downlow" the number of men with HIV is still smaller than the number of women or the number of children. All in all, about 12% of the country is HIV positive. You really think our gay population is that big?

No. Of course not. One of the reasons for widespread HIV infection across this country at least (I can't speak much for Zim) is that that is what happens when ignorance like "it comes from the gays" is spread from a country like yours to a country like mine - a poor, ultraconservative, and very homophobic nation. No one want to admit that they have it, and then they start getting desperate in their secret search for a cure that doesn't exist, or they completely ignore that they have it (if they even bother getting tested in the first place - because, if they're not gay, why would they get tested?) and they carry on with their sex lives as per usual, merrily spreading the virus far and wide.

Which brings us to the horrifically high rate of infection among children. Children (including god damn babies) are often raped because sicko scumbags trying to avoid hospitals and thus an admission that they have the "gay virus" have been told by witchdoctors that they can cure AIDs if they have sex with a virgin. Maybe if fuckers like you hadn't spent the last forty years pretending that HIV is a "gay thing", fewer children and babies in my country would have been violently raped out of sheer terrified and brutal ignorance.

A heartbreaking number of children are also born HIV-positive because one or both of their parents were infected - again, it can be a massive problem getting people tested if they're straight and they assume that that makes them safe. I'm not sure if you know this, but babies come from heterosexual sex.

You can say "well, they irresponsibly didn't practice safe sex" and I can want to slap you upside your ignorant skull, because not only did the kids not have that choice, but nor do many others since access to contraceptives, etc, is not guaranteed in a country as poor and unequal as this one.

HIV didn't hit your country near as bad as mine because you're rich enough to survive your own ignorance and your media's pervasive enough to cover up the fallout.

100%. It's a mess. The stigma around being gay complicates HIV treatment. And HIV's association with being gay compounds the stigma of being gay.

And the gay conversation's already a messy one, because populists hijack it constantly, turn it into a moral issue, and then use it to distract the fuck out of everyone. For instance, it's popular to blame the white man for importing homosexuality, even though colonial-era anti-sodomy laws are largely the root cause for homophobia. (not trying to turn it into a race issue - just illustrating the absurdity of the conversation on all fronts, 'cos in this thread we've got the other end of the spectrum with some dude saying Mandela brought "the gay" to Africa)
