One of my best friend's finished his first novel and it is coming out this year on Henry Holt -which is one of the most important publishers in the business.
I work with him on screen plays and stuff and help him vet ideas usually. I meet with him in NYC every month or two for some workshopping and brainstorming (whenever I am in town) and I am facinated by the wonderful career choice he has made.
but I would say this -You have to be undetered and completely motivated to make a novel work for a publisher, it will probably involve more time and effort selling and then promoting your book than actually writing it.
Stay focused and motivated -if you will put effort into every phase and build relationships in the industry -and you will find success.
