Ive been wrestling (about once a week- pure wrestling)along with bjj for about 3 years while doing bjj mostly. My wrestling fuckin sucks, my takedowns, defense, basically everything to do with wrestling is not good. I do well while drilling and can preform the techniques cleanly(imo and my coach has told me) but live I fall apart. Im pretty decent in nogi and striking and can hold my own, but wrestling i get destroyed pretty consistently.

I feel like im getting outmuscled and outhustled. Stronger guy grabs me in a bodylock and i cant do shit except go for a ride. I sprawl, they cut the corner and take me down anyway. I try to work my techniques with little to no success.

Im 28 years old and doing this as a hobby but id like to at least improve my skills if Im going to keep devoting time to this.

Is wrestling mostly based on who is more explosive? Anyone improve their wrestling to a decent standard while not being the most physically capable guy?

I'm no wrestler, but once a week isn't much. Thats 1-3h a week specifically for that.

I say, if wrestling is your sticking point, devote more time to it. At least 3-4 days more per week (assuming you train 5-6 days a week).

A teammate of mine (Muay Thai), lost due to lack of boxing (hands) knowledge beginning of last year. Next camp he sought out a boxing coach, devoted 3-4 / 6 days doing that, while keeping MT work on maintenance. The result, he did well in the last fight, TKO-ed his opponent.

What I'm saying is, more time needs to be devoted to a field, especially if its one thats your sticking point, and the one that you wish to improve upon.

When you sprawl on someone, they will turn the corner unless either you sprawl so hard on them they are practically flattened out with arms stretched out, OR if you start taking their back. Don't just sprawl and think you're safe, either spin to their side or establish a stronger position like with a headlock.

Also, a big part of getting takedowns is handfighting and positioning the opponent to where you want them. Armdrags and snapdowns to get them off balance/have their leg vulnerable.

And if they have a bodylock on you, then you likely dun goofed. Try to pummel under for an underhook, but in reality if they have a good grip on and start getting their hips under you then you can't really do much.

I suck ass at wrestling but I've done it in high-school. When it comes to BJJ I all of a sudden am like a D-1 level wrestler when I go up against guys with no wrestling background. The takedowns come fairly easily against guys my size.

I would be willing to bet money that this video will correct most if not all of your issues when sprawling

You're welcome

Also if you can, video yourself and post it up here. There are some legit guys here that could recognize any patterns that that might be causing you problems. Also my wrestling fairly well sucks also, but I noticed that (unsurprisingly lol) I do much better if I'm going super fast and turn up my aggressiveness. It feels dumb to type that out lol, but it made that much of a difference. And I'm a skinny, unathletic, stiff, inflexible blue belt bastard lol.

You haven't trained that much at all imho. With that frequency you might just be running into the problem that you learn something and you immediately lose the knack of it, without having even practiced it a lot to begin with (I know because it happened to me).

If you don't watch wrestling, you should. Keep an open mind and see there are different ways of going about things.

The mma/bjj view of wrestling is pretty narrow most places. It helps to free yourself of the idea that you have to snap and shoot or body lock.

its a level of dedication that you maybe missing. the same time that you put into BJJ its required for wrestling also if not more.. You have to open you mind be willing to devote time into bettering yourself when it comes to wrestling. once a week isnt anything it just like watching it on tv... Putting in time on the mat for the respected sport is needed. start off with 1-2 hours a day everyday to start... that were all of us started...

I assume when you say "wrestling" you are referring to take downs. Stand up technique takes a long time with lots of live practice to master. What is the saying? 7 to 1. 7 years standing vs 1 year on the ground. I know there is a judo history guy here who can clean that up, but the point is correct.

Keep at it.

You aren't wrestling enough to expect substantial improvement. Wrestling practices in school are about 2-2.5 hours long, 5-6 days a week. Your BJJ would probably not be very good either if you were only devoting one day a week to it. Wrestling is a tough sport, and it takes a long time to get decent at it.

I've been working on my wrestling for like 4 years and I'm just now seeing some success. And by that I mean I can play defense and sprawl on better guys long enough to make a good guard pull (sue me) and I'm taking down white belts and new blues.

It's fucking hard man. You just gotta keep doing it. I'm glad I train at a place where the coach is a sick wrestler, we have a lot if former college/hs guys and everyone is willing to start standing every round.
