Wrestling gets you in better shape than BJJ/Judo

Just got back from a super super super hard summer wrestling practice. Conditioning is the worst, on the upside we only ran 4 miles and drilled/trained for like 2 hrs with 1 waterbreak and no stopping. I'm super sore right now and I'm positive that wrestling gets you in MUCH better shape than other forms of grappling. Most BJJ schools just run a few laps and then do 1.5 hrs of drilling with like 30 mins of training at the end. Now I know this is for the casual person and alot of people view it as a hobby instead of a sport they want to compete in or get somewhere with.

I'm just saying if you're in highschool/college and can get on the wrestling team but don't do so because of BJJ then you should maybe change your ways. I still go to BJJ and I love it, but truly it is much easier.

Whatever dude, it's all about how had one works. Wrestling involves more strength than BJJ so of course serious wrestlers are more likely to lift.

What does everybody say the first time they roll with a wrestler? "Wow, that guys strong!"

It isn't necessarily that, its just gyms who have a practice as demanding as that of a wrestling team are very scarce, if they even exist at all.

Depends upon the level of competition. Olympic level judoka and wrestlers are at the same level of conditioning (they actually measure it at the olympic training camps, VO2 max etc). It's likely that ADCC finalists are at the same level as well, as well as most top level MMA folks (Fedor, Big Nog etc). When you're a professional athlete (which is what that level is), you absolutely cannot afford to get tired, so fitness is something they approach very scientifically.

At lower levels it depends, though in general BJJ'ers don't work fitness and strength as much as judo and wrestling do. And BJJ and judo both have recreational people who aren't particularly fit as all, whereas wrestling doesn't have recreational athletes.

every judo class i ever been to starts off with a 30 to 45 min warm up that leaves you drenched with sweat and tired the you start judo . bjj class i go to doesnt have much of a warm up but they drill for a bit and roll for hours and rolling is a work out .

amatuer wrestlers are crazy cardio machines but to dismiss the rest is really ignorant of you .

It's true that most HS wrestling practices are run at a much higher intensity than your average grappling class.

I never dismissed them, perhaps you should reread my post. I simply said most classes don't have as much focus on fitness and are easier.

Yall jus bein' ignorant.

No but yeah, i feel sorry for all the wrestlers at my school. However, if they were to the workouts in the sports i do they wouldnt last 10 minutes without drowning. But yeah wrestling conditioning is hard as fuck.

that's why its such a strong base. it really does mentally and physically prepare you. has a LOT of sport carryover as well.

I was always confused about one thing

There is no doubt in my mind that wrestling requires more conditioning then other grappling arts, and that wrestlers have better cardio then a lot of other grapplers...and they generally can go at a faster pace..

but why does it seem like so many top notch wrestlers gas so fast in mma? Theres a few guys who dont gas, but many do. Matt hammill comes to mind, along with some of mark colemans fights, tito ortiz gases all the time(even though hes considered a cardio machine, whatever), and theres been many others....

always baffled me.

Alot of those guys probably stopped doing as much cardio and started concentrating on other parts of MMA because they were lacking in them, thats the only explanation I can think of. Hughes and Sherk are wrestlers though and they almost never gas, especially Sherk.

I have a harder time at my BJJ team's practices than I did while wrestling for a short period of time at my local community college. Don't make generalized statements that belittle jiu jitsu like that. Wrestling teams do ALL their training together, BJJ teams don't. I'm sure their conditioning as a team impressed you, but BJJ fighters usually have to do their conditioning on their own time.

However, the amount of hard live rolling my BJJ team does is more than the amount of hard live wrestling I did when I checked out wrestling for a little while. Beyond that, the BJJ guys I train with train harder than the wrestlers that I trained with and seem to enjoy their sport more as well.

My HS football practice was quite a bit more physically demanding than BJJ CLASS.

Train with the guys who COMPTETE out of a BJJ/MMA gym and you will see the training is ALOT more demanding than the guys who just train as a past time.

Wrestling practice is COMPETITORS PRACTICING. To compare that to hobbyists learning and enjoying a fun skill/past time is beyond stupid.

As for former wrestlers gassing and saying its because they condidtion less now.....beyond dumb. Wrestling is great, but its not meant for 15 minutes, at the highest levels its meant for a 5 min period (international Freestyle) and wrestlers condidtion their minds and bodys to go all out for that time period. This can lead to an overextension when they make the change to MMA, because NO ONE can go all out for 15 + minutes.

Most BJJ/Judo also has other, older people, who couldn't or wouldn't want to be pushed as hard as a HS or College team's coach would push.

As well as wrestling (In HS/College) being purely for competition, while BJJ/Judo has people doing it simply for fun or fitness.

Care to give some examples of your average grappling gym having amazing cardio on par with your local high school wrestling team?

I have to say that most wrestlers have great cardio. BJJ is more technical or maybe I should say has more techniques. Of course anyone can work on cardio and have great cardio.

From what I see in MMA wrestlers gas because they are being punched and kicked. When someone does something that you do not train alot in, it messes with you as you tend to tense up and not relax as much. also when someone punches or kicks you really hard, it takes alot of your endurance away. Just me 2 cents.
