I'm no expert on freestyle/MMA wrestling. The stereo typical body type is thick and stocky...
Jon Jones is the first lanky, skinny assed mofo , DOMINANT wrestler Ive seen... He defies muscle size, Cormier... Etc.
How is this possible? How can a beanpole dominate long range, plus wrestling like no other in history?
I don't get it.. tell me wrestling fanboys...
This is the answer. His use of leverage is amazing..
He's not a historically great pure wrestler, not even close. He's an accomplished collegiate champion but there's a world of difference between that and world champions and olympians. Jon is however arguably the best MMA wrestler ever because of his overall fight/grappling IQ from years of training at Jackson/Wink combined with his ridiculous length and leverage over basically all of his opponents. He's dominant with an atypical frame for wrestling in MMA specifically because he relies less on explosion and brute strength (not that he isn't strong and capable of slamming guys smaller than him) and more on good timing and setups using his striking. Especially the thai clinch, his leverage, height, and long arms make him almost impossible to outmaneuver in the clinch, and a lot of his grappling and takedowns are set up from there.
DC said that Jones was on his radar as a wrestler and if he didn't quit he was going to the Olympics.
With only high school wrestling he embarrassed Daniel Cormier, who came 4th in the Olympics. Imagine if Jon had similar experience/age as Daniel?
He may really be the most talented wrestler we have ever seen

There are many succesful wrestlers of dif body types.. it's what one can do with that body type. Most thin, long athletes that compete in wrestling are very strong, freakishly athletic 8 out of 10 times, and use a dif leverage because of length, that the avg wrestler doesn't train with nor is use to.I'm no expert on freestyle/MMA wrestling.
