Key defensive position so if you're really good at it, the bar for the bat is really low. But also because most catchers are bad hitters, teams sometimes think that the advantage of getting a good one in that position is worth the defensive sacrifice. That's always been how it is, pretty much (arms mattered a lot less for a while because SBs were disappearing). Other than Gibson and Piazza, there haven't been any really great hitting catchers, and Piazza gave back a lot of value on defense (I'd still have him at No. 6, though).

I kinda get that but it annoys me how it's like a disposable DH position.

Fight Night 3 was the pinnacle.

That one was always my favorite (the between rounds swelling/cutman mini game was something I thought it did better than what came after) but the haymaker system in it was annoying.

I hate how in FNR4 and FNC your swelling and cuts are determined by how judicious you are with your shots in the prior round... but the AI somehow always recovers better than you.

Seth Morrison personified the "just send it" attitude before it became a mainstream thing.
