Idk about their reputation abroad, but the appeal here boils down to capitalist dogma. Americans are by and large hostile to getting used stuff. Everything has to be new. Even if you're cash-strapped and the new stuff is junk, most would prefer that to, say, getting furniture off Craigslist. I, of course, am on the opposite side of that spectrum, and most of my possessions are secondhand. But not everyone can be as awesome and hash tag woke as I am.

That's usually the case here as well, although I'd say furniture is actually one of the exceptions. Especially if it's old enough to be considered, "vintage". Furniture auctions are very popular.

Yeah, Gumtree.
Deceased estates and people leaving the country especially. That's how my brother got all his stuff. Bought a couple of recliners, rocked up with a friends lorry and the guy just said, "Hey, do you want to take everything else?". Gave him his TV and playstation as well. Just couldn't be bothered with the whole private sale process apparently (presumably what ever his new OS job was, it paid well), although it's odd he didn't have any mates he could offload it on.
That was newer stuff though. '90s and 2000s furniture doesn't seem to have much of a market. Even if it's quality.
Retro '60s, '70s and '80s stuff, along with older "vintage" or antique gear, certainly does.
