Oh my goodness yes. This whole trope of the comedian as a tortured genius is so lame and tired. How many stories do we have to hear about the plight of being on the road and writing material based on your life? Shut the fuck up, you're telling jokes for a living,

Not sure what you're talking about regarding the prevalence of those types of joke, I'm more interested in why you (profanely) dismiss the challenges of the job.

Tortured artists in general.

I just think comedians are best used sparingly since they’re usually competing with each other and it’s noticeable. Imagine going to a party with only comedians. Shudder.

I think making really good comedy is difficult in general, but I also have the hunch that standup comedians aren't even the best at their own craft. I think most intellectually talented people have comedic skills, but very few of them pursue standup comedy because it has certain limitations as a form of art, labor, expression, self-realization, etc.

Profanely

I get in a lot of arguments over Norm McDonald. I find him fucking hilarious. Can see why he's not everyone's cup of tea, as you have to have an extremely advanced understanding of comedy to fully appreciate him. He's the 4D chess of comedy.

Also in God tier are Chappelle and Carlin. Hedberg is (was) great too, obviously very unique.

If I gotta pass a test to get an answer then let's skip it. :)
No, it just seems to me that people profanely dismiss all kinds of things here without the blink of an eye and I'm genuinely curious why my doing so of standup comedy causes a reaction. I don't really have a good answer to your question other than that's how I feel, but maybe that means I failed your test. ;)

It was a one word description of your strong reaction. I could have left that out, but included it since I don't recall you saying fuck a lot so it seemed possibly significant.

I think the job would be incredibly difficult for most people and wondered why you seem to think the opposite. So I asked. I do that kinda thing from time to time. It' ain't some "gotcha".

I'm a defensive person by nature, among other things. I am sorry. I don't agree that the job is inherently difficult, or at least anywhere near as difficult as a lot of jobs that people don't give a second thought to. Of course, being as dismissive of I was in reductive but in general I have listened to too many podcasts with the same stories over and over about stand up comedy as an art that one suffers for. I have never felt that way about it and thus it rubs me the wrong way, perhaps that is all birthed from my feeling that most stand up comedy is pandering to a specific audience.

Who is that specific audience?

No worries.

Do you think making it in a band is easy too? It's similar components. Put out recorded material, drive from town to town for shit pay as an opener, possibly bomb in front of a crowd whose feedback clearly says you suck at your job. Personally I've got lots of respect for touring bands, having worked with plenty, and that carries over to comics. I also believe making people laugh is much more difficult than entertaining them with music.

It varies depending on the act, is what I mean. I've never really seen a standup challenge its audience, rather it caters its material to that group. That probably isn't the point of standup, but again, it's a reason I find it boring.

Maybe you misunderstand my use of the word difficult. I don't think that it is easy to be a stand up comedian, or a touring band. Is that work less taxing than most? I would think so.

Not sure what you envision most jobs to be. If you're only talking physical toll then I think you underestimate the rigors for working until late at night then trying to sleep in a vehicle as you go to the next city (for weeks on end).

What's your job? I do accounting and it's cake compared to touring and performing.

Whoa, dawg! I can make anyone laugh, but am an utter failure as a musician. That goes for a small, or one on on setting.

People dismissing the difficulty of live entertainment seem to overlook one of the most common phobias; public speaking, or stage fright, if you will. I'm fine addressing a few dozen people, but would probably freeze, or at least sweat my as off, under a spotlight in front of thousands. Even seeming relatable or likeable under those conditions is a skill I figure.
