I think that what it is is that the physical response to fear is indistinguishable from the physical response to attraction. So if people feel fear in a situation where some cues suggest that attraction is appropriate, they interpret it that way, and then it kind of locks in.
I don't. You ever see a cute puppy and have the hair on the back of your neck stand up. Or hear something go bump in the night and get a boner?
There being responses like you described in the experiments doesn't mean that's all there is to the matter. I'd say there's an ocean of shit we don't understand about attraction. Fear though seems more straightforward.
