No, I asked them to talk about what was upsetting them, listening to them. establishing that they were not suicidal and if so, ascertain whether or not they had a plan or have attempted it before...

if they weren't I just listened and did a lot of feelings reflection.

Do you then also see how despicable it is to use depression as an insult? You were supposedly empathic with people who were depressed and suicidal, how do you then use that as an insult? That's like someone working with people with disabilities people "cripples" or something.
