I've heard New Orleans is like another planet. I believe it, especially with the stories you've personally shared here. Like one giant cluster-fuck of good times and horrible crimes wrapped in one with a classical backdrop of beautiful history, architecture and modern debauchery.

Off topic, but I remember a teacher in high school telling us about what life on the mainland might be like to those of us going off to college. One thing he warned us about were that the cops on the mainland were very "different" than the ones on the islands. My anecdotal personal experience has supported that opinion. The police were definitely nicer back then. I haven't lived there in nearly 20 years, but I hope it's still accurate.
