Part of the reason, if not most of the reason, the code is so complicated is it is full of special interest laws. I share your disdain for the ones that are specifically written to benefit corporations, but there are a bunch of different ones that do not. The mortgage interest deduction is to help home owners, for example.

But yeah, the special interest stuff is totally unfair. Both sides agree that it is too complicated and should be simplified but they are far apart on what to cut out!
