Would UFC have more popularity and stars if they were only on FOX?

Get rid of PPV's and do only FOX and FS1 cards, keep fight pass for the hardcores and use it as a platform to build up fighters. FOX cards always get in the millions when it comes to viewership so I think this is the way to go. If you put a Conor fight on FOX in prime time it would do huge numbers. Fighters would get way more exposure and thus popularity.

Thoughts?

If they made up the shortfall in number of events and gave the fighters a % of advertising instead of PPV then it would be great for the fighters because more people would watch and they'd make more money... Less so for the UFC.

They would lose insane money

Money would comes from sponsors and the contract with FOX. Boxing and MMA are the only sports that still use PPV model.

They would never make up the money difference
If they could they would

Nobody will pay $45m for an MMA TV event (approx a 1.25m buy PPV take)
That is 30% of the approx Fox gave UFC in 2017

That might turn me into a casual fan as I cannot handle the pacing of Fox cards.

it would help popularize the sport.
This is how they do all around the world.

it might be less money, but it is a set amount which means even if no one watches, they make the same money. Less pressure that way.

The can do one (or two) huge cards on PPV (like they did with MSG), and keep all the rest inside FOX.

What does the exposure of being on Fox really do? I feel like the people who want to watch the fights will seek out to watch it no matter what platform they are on.

Do people who never seen the UFC just scroll through the channels on a Saturday evening and stop on Fox/FS1 and stay on that channel? Are fans of Dancing with the Stars UFC viewers? Are fans of Ellen DeGeneres show UFC viewers? I'm honestly curious of how much of a boost in viewership these venues and free TV bring in.

When I rarely go to a bar or restaurant to watch a PPV fight I still hear some stupid comments. Fighters go to the ground and I hear "Is this some sort of homosexual wrestling?" Or, "Yeah I know a guy who trains UFC, he could probably beat the UFC champ Chuck Liddell." This is crap I heard in 2017...are they really going to be weekly viewers? Who knows...

I do agree with you on your exposure/viewership points though @marksmen . I'm not trying to shit on you at all.

By the way, when there are PPV's I tend to gather with a larger group of people to pitch in and watch. But when it's free cards I tend not to and watch it solo. For example... the viewership from a PPV off 1 purchase will have 6 people watching whereas a Fox card will have 6 people watching from 6 separate televisions. Is this common with anyone else, and how do you think it effects numbers?

How often do UFC ppv do anywhere close to 1 mil buys though

I dont really think Big Fox wants that many fight cards. Putting the main card on at 5pm PST never helps either.

Nah

Ufc is dying

They'd have tons more casual fans if they streamed some high profile events on Netflix.

Just wait if they go with AT&T/ Direct TV.

You can't just get rid of PPV and put it all on Fox channels. There must be some alternative to PPVs to generate the revenues they need. Yes this idea would increase the popularity to an extent but might be the death of the company.

check out what the wwe does with their subscription model, i think they would stand to gain a lot with that approach.

nailed it

My bad, I'm not arguing against those few, I was thinking you were implying most PPVs

All good

But I'm pretty versed on this stuff (if you want to see interviews/articles PM me)
If UFC could come close to making the same over-all money from Fox (as they do with PPV & Fox), they would JUMP at it ASAP
