I think we're conditioned to believe we have to give our employer two weeks notice because that's what most employers hope people do, based on their own self-interest. It's not like if they're firing you, they feel obligated to give you two weeks notice. Smarter companies are pretty tight-lipped about what they say about former employees to avoid getting sued, so at this point, I wouldn't be that concerned about the consequences, unless you work for a vindictive employer or are in a small industry where word might get around.
This is completely true. You should be fine. I got some heat from my supervisor once because we had a guy who was a complete dipshit and ended up throwing a clipboard and walking out on us. Well, couple weeks later I get a call from another organization asking about the guy because he applied with them. I told them how he is incompetent and how big of a jackass he is and if they hire him to keep a close eye on him. My supervisor knew someone called and asked me what I said and I told her. She basically told me to never do that and all I can say is their start date and ending pay rate, and if they ask if we would hire them again all I can say is yes or no.
