There is a difference between nationality and ethnicity. Japan is very homogeneous country while Brazil is extremely mixed-up, of course Machida's Brazilian side isn't going to be "pure bred".

His mother surname is portuguese, so he isn't completely japanese. It doesn't make any difference though, Machida is still the Dragon
