With the Helio Gracie filter, shouldn't the Gracies know striking?

Galvao had two serious sub attempts to Ryron's three.

However, Galvao's were the half guard/mounted collar choke type, while Ryron's were last ditch leglock attempts at the very end.

SBJ is a full on Ryron and Rener Gracie cultist, with recent branching out into finally being interested in other people, so be wary of his words regarding Ryron and Rener.

More like, pretend to be interested in other people so the Gracie academy spam seems less spammy

Honestly who the fuck tries to defend the helio filter lol

Nobody with any sense. But then again, this kind of garbage comes from the guy who said that Kevin Casey has better Jiu Jitsu than Keenan. It's not really about demonstrable fact, it's about ideology and the service of a borderline cult of personality.

Speaking of the Helio Filter, I'm only about 20% of the way through Choque and it's starting to get good. Apparently Helio was hundreds of miles away in another city doing very well in both swimming competitions and rowing competitions while Carlos was learning jiu jitsu from Donato Pires dos Reis (not Maeda). Kinda lays rest to both the "sickly frail kid with fainting spells" and the "I learned by watching Carlos" myths in one shot.

The book is kinda giving me a headach because it's 80% translated newspaper articles from the 1900's interspersed with commentary on them arranging in purely chronological order, but it's got some real interesting info in it.

Weren't there a few Gracies that had decent striking or boxing when they fought in MMA? For some reason I remember somebody saying Crosley Gracie had decent boxing skills.

Crosley is a good example. But he actively trained boxing with legitimate boxing coaches, he didn't just slap on boxing gloves at the BJJ academy.

Carlson figured out long ago that BJJ alone was not enough for success in MMA. That's why he was the first to bring in boxing trainers for his guys prepping for vale tudo fights.

Gracie Academy, and many other schools such as the Valenta Brothers in Florida and Carlson Gracie London teach striking. The main reason it has been taught less the last 10 years probably has to do a lot with the fact that many BJJ schools are affiliated with Muay Thai and MMA gyms and would encourage you to cross train.

Neither Ryron nor Galvao went for any serious submission attempts at Metamoris 1. If striking was allowed neither of them would have played jiu-jitsu the way they did so it's a moot point.

As to the whole "Helio Filter" thing, that doesn't mean Ryron and Rener don't use sport moves. There was the video a few weeks ago of the two sparring at a school where you can clearly see Rener doing for deep half for a recent example. They focus on the self defense stuff, both for marketing and tradition purposes, but that doesn't mean they just hide in 1980s jiu-jitsu.

As to Helio's striking, I don't know just how good he was or anything but I know he cross trained a bit in boxing, and Carlos and George Gracie supposedly did as well back in the late 1920s though I don't have a decent source for that.

Galvao had two serious sub attempts to Ryron's three.

Submission attempt = final act of grabbing or wrapping something and putting on the squeeze or pressure to get a tap.

OFFICIAL SUBMISSION ATTEMPTS

Ryron = 4 (5:46, 0:35, 0:27, 0:16)
Andre = 0
Please provide the time codes from this video where you think Galvao wrapped something up and applied a squeeze or pressure to finalize Ryron.

my God people still complaining about who won that stupid galvao ryron fight. there was no point system or judges. just move on. ryron did his shitty thing of lying there and galvao couldnt submit him

nothing worse than gracie nuthuggers

The Helio Gracie filter is what Ryron and Rener use to guide their thought process. For example, you might say to yourself: 'can I get gullible people to buy my DVDs and watch my videos if I teach the berimbolo?' and the answer would be no, because Rafa Mendes does the berimbolo much better than they can and has free videos. Therefore, filming a berimbolo video would not help Ryron and Rener utilize their grandfather's legacy to make money with questionable products. As such it wouldn't pass the Helio Gracie filter, which is basically 'can I make money off my grandfather's legacy with this product or service?'. So it's simple really, but not applicable to anyone who isn't a direct descendant of Helio Gracie.

And to answer TS's question directly, Helio wasn't known for his striking and as such there's little money to be made teaching Helio Gracie striking. So no, it doesn't pass the filter.
lol.

They are selling to the self defense market. A lot of these Gracie Combative dojo's are former or current karate and TKD places.

People that want to fight and compete will go to a more competitive BJJ school that will have a kickboxing or Mauy Thai program.
