Winning NG-2 Knuckle Guard **Review**

A fellow member was kind enough to send me a pair of these. I am now going through with a wrapped hand to see which gloves fit....lol. I am going to give them a workout this week.

I'm on the same boat. I'm just waiting for them to come in.

Add me to the "unimpressed by NG-2" list too please.

I find my Combat Sports GEL Knuckle Guards a lot better fitting and even more protective. After hearing about the NG-2 for so long on here, I was sorely disappointed.

EDIT: Going to try StRatoCastR's wrapping technique to see if it helps the NG-2s sit over the knuckles any better, and check back in if there's any change.

Yeah it should work however just buying high quality gloves nullifies the need for the ng-2

I disagree with that sentiment strongly. They would work well with gloves like Reyes training gloves, or most Mexican gloves which have that gap before the knuckles for example. High quality gloves but for the majority not ones that offer a lot of protection.

I just don't see the reasoning why use Reyes if you are having hand issues? Why not get that actually works correctly for you hand and is more suited for it. Doesn't make sense to me minow.

Scenario: You love the fit and feel of Cleto Reyes gloves but don't feel like they provide quite enough knuckle protection

Solution: NG2s!

I have very small hands, and using them in 12 oz Reyes were extremely uncomfortable. There was a sizable bulge in glove which misshaped the striking area. They looked bad and functioned worse. I saw similar results in my 16 oz Reyes, though not as pronounced.

I have used them with 16oz Reyes. To each their own. The example of Reyes was given really just to illustrate that using the NG2 does not necessarily mean you aren't using "quality" gloves.

As an aside here's Sergio wrapping with NG2s at 0:55:

And GSP at 0:14:

GSP used his with Tokushu 16oz in the above video. I couldn't use mine with Tokushu at any weight really, as it ended up being too cramped, and I didn't feel the need for it. What works for one fighter may not work for another.

Just an update.

Been playing with a bunch of different wrapping styles to use with the NG-2s, mostly based on StRatoCastR's recommendations. Currently able to get the guards to sit decently with minimal shifting after a lot of experimentation. My main issue before was that I couldn't get them to sit properly on the knuckles to offer decent protection, so that's a big improvement. Managed to squeeze the wraps + NGs into my new Reyes Fit Cuffs, but it was a pretty tight fit in there. Not quite cutting off circulation, but my hand was pretty much locked into a fist (not able to move much for opening or closing). To tell the truth, the guards are thinner than my CSI knuckleguards; but I need more wrapping to hold them in place, hence the bulk. If I can get RSK to make me some nice, custom glove converters, I'll use the NG-2's with my Grants. Otherwise, I'll probably have to wait until either of the pairs of Reyes break in a bit before I can use the NG-2's regularly. No idea yet on how they perform in regards to shock reduction when seated properly across the knuckles; haven't been able to hit the bag lately due to a serious cut on my hand. Hoping to be able to punch bags again next week or the week after.

EDIT: PS- NG-2s + Reyes Compression wraps make a pretty nice combo, though maybe not the most solid wrist support (due to the flexibility of the wrap) - definitely less bulky.

Since you did use the NG-2 using my wrapping method, did you try inserting them in at step 7? That seems to lock them in the best for me personally. Also I cut the hand attachment, it was too bothersome.

Little wary about cutting the hand attachment. I'd be more likely not to slip my fingers through and just balance it only knuckles if I was that worried about it.

What ended up working the best for me was inserting it after Step 11 and then using Steps 12 through 14 to really lock it in there. First time (12), half-width of the wrap along the base of the NG, so it won't shift towards the wrist. Second time (13), about half-width of the wrap along the edge of the NG along the fingers, then tucking it in so it won't shift distally. Third time (14), wrapping with the edge of the wrap at the base of the NG (the rest below) to really lock in that first pass and make sure it can't drift towards the wrist. The second pass was usually enough to keep it from drifting towards the fingers, that's why I didn't bother putting it on before wrapping between the fingers. Keeping the fingers in the hand attachment also helps with this. Of course, I haven't spent that much time on the heavybags with it yet, so I may revise this later.

With the Reyes Compression wrap, it's not long enough to go through the fingers anyway, so I just do a lot of X-wraps across the back of the fists, secure the NG, and secure the thumb. Works okay so far and it's way less bulky, but the velcro placement's a little weird and it may not be as supportive for the wrists as I'm used to due to the flexibility - but if I pull it too tight, I start cutting circulation. The NG-2 + Reyes Compression wrap combo feels about perfect in the Reyes 16oz velcros; will just have to see what the wrist support's like.

I could never figured out how to include the knuckle guards into the wrap. I just started leaving them seperately outside the wraps and with a little fenagling I usually found success with where I wanted the guards to be.

Been trying these out here and there since I got them. I like the hand strap on them therefore no cutting will be done here. With the gloves I can actually use these with....I like them.

Thanks for putting up these videos. It seems like they don't go around the knuckles as much when using the ng-2. Good to see others having success with the ng-2's.

i must say to this new reviewing guy connahS...i am starting to become fan of your reviews.
you said you are only 16 if i am not wrong, yet your reviews are experienced , to the point precise , covers pretty much everything specially the technical aspects...honest and objective.
keep up the good work mate.
