My friend wants me to post this for him

hey guys i would like to know for a 25 year old what would be a better style to learn for self defense. wing chun or muy thai. i know muy thai is lethal and all but wing chun trains you to be quick and handle the situation fast. For muy thai you would have to train for hrs and work on it constantly but wing chun seems like something you can be doing when your like in your 70s or 80s please give me your reaons thanks

You can do WC in to your 70's and 80's only if you start in your, 20's to get enough techinque to make up for the lose of speed and strength. If your friend is looking for something that does not take serious traing time to get good at than, they should look at MT. WC takes alot more hours and alot more work to get effective than MT. And you can still MT in to your late 60's at least. If you need hand to hand self defense in your 70's and 80's you better have been training for decades already to make up for the strength, speed and conditioning disadvantages you are going to have.

I always say this....for pure self defense do Krav Maga.

Groin kicks, hammer fists, elbows to the back of the head, weapon defense, takedown defense, headlock defense, bearhug defense.....these are all taught in Krav Maga.
This hybrid art literally only teaches defense techniques and only teaches the ones that work.

The hardest part of this martial art is finding a legit teacher + school.

p.s. To answer your original question, Muay Thai is the better option than WC.

Muay thai is harder on the body physically and is also a sport if looking for something to do for a while and more street self defense orientated I'd say wing chun just make sure you find a good school where they don't milk you and make you do forms for the first year etc.

This....

And keep in mind, you can never take any shortcuts in learning anything. Self defense isn't something you learn in an hour and can expect to use for a lifetime. No matter what you take, expect to put in a lot of effort if you want worthwhile results.

Neither. Learn how to run fast.

I can endorse this statement. the nick name of our kung-fu school is "The art of Running with Confidence". It is a joke to remind us that the most important part of self-defense is making an escape route and then taking it.

ACTUALLY....self defense starts with the mind and definitely something that can be learned in an hour given that it starts with awareness and avoidance.

That said, the two arts are polar opposites in terms of training methodology. MT will get you in far better shape and produce proper ring fighting abilities in a shorter period of time. It uses the eight limbs, and requires a lot of conditioning of the body and don't be fooled, it is painful at the onset. In the end, you WILL be a fighter.

WC is a more well rounded TCMA--but as stated it is "kung fu" as such will take longer to cultivate to it's potential. However, you don't need years and years and years to make WC work, you only need proper understanding, proper real world conditioning, and a proper teacher. All three are very hard to find in this age of WC. You'll know you've got it when you can hold your own against those of the same skill level in other arts.

For self defense, either would work. I'd say both should be learned to be honest. Let application be your guide.

yeah train krav to learn how to kick someone in the nuts. that will do you good.
-had my first fight when i was 11 and kicked the other guy in the nuts 3 times. no training or nothing.

dude, MT.

self defense is for when you cant run, or when you are with somebody who cant run.. you all ready know this. :icon_neut

Yeah I am sure you are one of those awesome people who can take a knife out of someone's hand in 0.5 seconds and dodge bullets followed by a triple spinning jump kick. I bet you can also fight 50 people at once with your superior katas.

Not everyone can be like you sir, so stop generalizing.

Dammit! i only have 4 limbs, can i still be a fighter with only half the limbs needed?

You are trying to be more stupid then you are.. I could call you a nerd, and tell you to read my post again. But i dont think you really care anyway. :icon_lol:

I'd recommend that your friend try both. And others. He might find that one fits his abilities, body type, etc. more. Wing Chun is very much based on close range fighting. MT has more range with it's kicks, punches, and clinch work. He might also want to look into a jiu jitsu dojo. Krav Maga is also great and more than just kicks to the groin. A good instructor will cover choke escapes, strike counters, weapons defense, ground fighting, etc. Areas not typically covered by some martial arts classes. It's also meant to be learned and used by people of all ages, abilities and body types. A combat sambo course will be similar. That said, ANY martial arts knowledge will help in 90-99% of situations as most people haven't had any training beyond brawling.

do krav maga. knowing how to fight like a woman (eye gouges, groin grabbing, etc) is often overlooked by pure sport martial arts and the best way to learn how to defend yourself is by drilling things that are intuitive to human instinct

I train in Muay Thai primarily and do Krav a couple times a week as well.
For pure self-defense do Krav Maga.
For a more ass kicking (offensive) defense approach go Muay Thai.

The only problem with Muay Thai as self-defense is that its a very offensive art and you only strike. You never train in illegal moves and you NEVER train in choke, bear hug, and ground defense.

Honestly though, your best bet is to try a little of everything and see which fits you best. I used to do BJJ only but tried out Boxing, Muay Thai and Krav Maga. Over the past year I have fallen in love with the striking arts. Couldn't be happier :icon_chee

WC will teach you a more reactive style and focuses on hands and taking your opponent off his center. MT will teach you how to hurt with every limb. It's speed v power, so you choose.
