I don't think any high level Western official truly believes that making the lives of ordinary Russians miserable will lead to Putin being overthrown. Historically sanctions aren't effective in that way. Iraq suffered under crushing sanctions for years but Saddam still help power, ditto Iran, Cuba, and North Korea. The severity of sanctions in this case seems to be driven more by emotion than any kind of thought out strategy. The West cannot confront Putin militarily so they're lashing out and being as punitive as possible out of frustration imo.

First, these are actions taken by individual sporting organizations, not governments.

Second, the goal of the sanctions isn't to cause ordinary Russians to be so miserable that they'll rise up. The goal of these sanctions is 1) hit Putin's oligarch buddies so hard that they'll demand Putin stop the invasion and 2) make it impossible for Russia to fund a long-term invasion or occupation.

Everyone needs to calm down about this. I highly doubt the UFC would ban Russian fighters.

All they have to do is have them fight in Brazil or Abu Dhabi, both of which the UFC have a presence in and have expressed neutrality and refused to condemn Russia.

Blaming American citizens is more plausible since American Presidents are most likely legitimately elected compared to Putin, oh and America is the biggest unconditional supporter of apartheid Israel no matter the President.
