We've been spoiled during the Zuffa era with the purchase PRIDE, WEC, and Strikeforce. The influx of big names from a big merger is a thing of the past until the UFC decides to buy out Bellator (which I seriously doubt). Unless the UFC starts a farm league it's going to be tough to match the quality of cards we once had. Some fans blame the amount of cards (which is a problem to a certain extent) but the only way to build fighters is to put on fights.

Agree? Disagree? Thanks for reading.

What is starting a feeder league gonna do? They could buy out PFL, Titan FC and pretty much any relevant American, non-Bellator orgs and merge them into one; it still won't be close to what Pride, WEC, and Strikeforce were. Even if you added Rizin, KSW, and ACB it probably wouldn't be as big of a deal.

The only league's talent even worth absorbing is Bellator's, and that isn't happening.

UFC already has feeder leagues in Invicta and PFL, or atleast some highly dubious connections with PFL. They want to build up the name without compromising the UFC name, tho they have already compromised by watering everything down and WMMA.

The ufc needs to cut the dross. That means getting rid of a bunch of weight classes. They need to manufacture a bunch of new stars. Their promotion of fighters absolutely sucks. They have no stars. They need to make belts legitimate again.. We were never spoiled. There are more cards now than ever and it was better back then. The ufc is supposed to be a spectacle and an event that people look forward to.

At least have the crap on tv and make the ppvs great again..

It's shit now. And wme couldn't run a piss up in a brewery.

A lot of fans say that -- "they need to manufacture new stars". If only it were that easy. I agree with you on the weight classes. Heard they are adding two more as part of the ESPN tv deal. Atomweight for women and 165 lbs for men. Could be just a rumor.

there are over 500 UFC fighters. Most of the "big names" are near the end of their career. there are many promising fighters but due to the sheer number of fighters in the UFC, not even including Bellator and other leagues, makes it hard to identify up and promote up and coming stars. The old big names still command enough consistent purchasing power that they are still promoted heavily.

the UFC needs to do a better job promoting new names. and MMA fans need to realize that fighters lose in MMA. undefeated fighters are extremely rare and MMA has more variables than any other combat sport.

Too many weight classes waters down the sport.

A lot has added to the watering down. More weight classes more cards more fighters pulling out due to injury.

Ufc also seems to be struggling to build fighters up now.

why buy bellator when they can just buy anthony joshua?

uhh

the cards are watered down because they've been shifting away from the PPV model for half a decade now. more cards on network television results in more secure, less volatile income. this was reported in the S&P's back in like.. 2010?

they don't want to be in the PPV business. it's too volatile, can get fucked by things like USADA, injury, dudes they create choosing to fight busses and bellator officials after being gifted everything and invested in heavily, etcetc. a PPV every now and then to provide $$$ is good, but depending on them is not. network TV is their intended future, and to tackle that they need consistent events to fill time slots and generate that ad $$ - which means spreading out the talent.

Those are valid points and you also have to throw in the factor that they hold over twice as many cards as they once used to so cards are less stacked with stars.

Nope , lose 1 fight & you suck & always sucked & everyone you fought sucked . Win 1 fight vs unranked fighter you are the GOAT
This is Sherbo logic in its current form , oddly it is the same as the casual perspective .

As for most things, the answer isn't as simple as pointing to one thing. There are a myriad of reasons that cards are watered down these days, including:

1. The fact that elite fighters tend to only fight once or twice a year, whereas past fighters fought much more regularly.

2. The proliferation of unnecessary weight classes (i.e., WFLW and WFW).

3. Too many fighters under contract. There are a ton of guys on the roster who have no business being in the UFC.

4. The UFC's inability to market fighters and build new stars to replace the old guard.
