Why was the state of Israel not created prior to 1948?

the Balfour Declaration was signed all the way back in 1917, and the idea for a homeland for the Jews was clearly thought of long before that. The holocaust just gave them an excuse to move things along far quicker.

So no, the holocaust had very little to do with the creation of Israel.(imo)

31 years elapsed between 1917 and 1948. So, as you say, the Holocaust did have an impact on that outcome. How many more years would it have taken without the Holocaust? The Zionist movement was stagnant prior to WWII.

On topic, Herzl's writings, and the tending of Zionism (Which he would not have likely supported) led to the creation of the Jewish state well before the Holocaust, which was indeed a catalyst.
 
The Brits had already promised the land to the Jews in 1917, but the creation of the state of Israel is definitely more connected to what happened to the Jewish populations in Europe during the second world war.
