As someone who has been both a tutor (a one-on-one teacher) and a teacher of classes of students, that joke does not ring true to me. It's just as tough to excel as a tutor as it is as a teacher, maybe moreso as the expectations are greater. As a teacher you can go through the motions somewhat; as a tutor you can't get away with that so much.
