Why UFC has no Grand Prix Tournament?

the UFC should just do a tournament!!! I'm sure they could find a commission that would sanction multiple rounds in 1 night, but even if they couldn't..... JUST DO IT!! one round per event. it would be amazing.... we would speculating on this forum from the moment the field was announced. and then when the brackets come out (I wish PRIDE had structured tournaments... the only bracketed tourneys were the 2000 gp and the 2005 ww and lw GPs), we would GO NUTS!

dana bitches about injuries, but these same injuries fuck up EVERY CARD NOWADAYS.... just have alternate bouts every round

UFC fan boys will never understand the excitement of a Grand Prix with great warriors/fighters, not "athletes"

Those were fighters that would fight anyone at anytime, not matter the weight of the opponent. Now we have champions that want 6 months to prepare for one fight and can't fight anyone because they need to pick and choose whoever is less threatening.

From the UFC's perspective, you basically derail the momentum of 7 top contenders. Plus the champ would have to sit a long time waiting for the tournament winner.

When the GP was announced everyone was so.excited, but when Fedor lost and Ubereem didnt look so Uber against Werdum, people lost interest. People wanted Fedor vs Overeem. When that wasnt happening people didnt care. Losing Overeem and having the finals delayed also cost them fan interest. How many months was it from start to finish?

I don't disagree with any of this but the best part about this was it was Dan Cormier's coming out party.

They are easy to market, but don't always work well in practice. Injuries frequently screw them up, and if one guy was in a war but the other guy had a quick finish you end up with an uneven fight.

I'm guessing the reason is a hot girl sat next to Dana and rubbed his lap and said "Gran Prixs suck." and he said "I totally agree sweethart."

PRIDE GP's were exciting and the king of the hill at the end has a certain aura, a marketable aura.

Huge cash prize for the winner. You still wanna say you're injured if it means you just gave up your chance at the huge cash prize, or are you going to suck it up, tape it up, and go in there with a sense of urgency to land some KO punch or lock in some finishing submission? Better yet, train in a smarter way to reduce the chances of getting injured in training and don't train with the badasses who try to hurt someone in the gym to gain some bragging rights at the strip joints.

Fighting multiple times a night won't be allowed by any of the big athletic commission.

Sanctioning it would be nearly impossible.

As far as tournaments go, there was a tournament for the Flyweight title not too long ago.

Now if you're talking where fighters have to fight more than once in a single night, not going to happen. Even Strikeforce's HW "Grand Prix" didn't have fighters fighting more than once a night. Unified Rules of MMA won't allow a fighter to fight more than 5, 5 minute rounds a night.

Last time a US promotion tried a one night tournament, it didn't turn out so well . . .

Strikeforce had a middleweight and women's bantamweight 1 night tournament. Battlegrounds MMA is about to have their first one-night, 8 man tournament

So, yes, it can still happen, and yes, all sanctioned by the appropriate State Athletic Commissions.

Doesn't NEED to be one night tourney. A month or two months apart is cool.

Pride widows are so annoying...

Makes it more difficult for a matchmaker to prevent marketable fighters from their kryptonites.

For example Nick Diaz would have been blanketed by a wrestler in such a format, when they can instead just make sure he doesn't have to fight one unless it's for the title.

Things get strange when they do non TUF tourneys.
