Demetrius Johnson is a good fighter. He has had a long reign as flyweight champion and defended against some top opponents. However, in recent years, his level of competition has really dropped off and many people are hoping that he will move up in weight. However, any time you criticize Demetrius, his rabid defenders (a small but passionate group) will jump to call you a hater of the smaller weight classes and say you're not a real fan of MMA which are completely untrue statements for a lot of us. I want to clear the air as to why I think Demetrius has worn out his welcome and why it has nothing to do with his size.

The issue with Demetrius is that he ran out of contenders years ago and yet instead of challenging himself and fighting contenders at a higher weight class (or agreeing to fight TJ at Flyweight which he was offered), he has just lingered around fighting completely undeserving bottom feeders to pad his record. That would be like DC remaining in 205 right now in the ridiculous state it's in. If DC started defending against the likes of Corey Anderson and Gian Villante for several years, people would be tired of him as well. However, unlike Demetrius, DC is going up to fight the current champ at HW in a dangerous but highly anticipated showdown. DC was also a top contender at the weight class above him, like DJ, and both would likely be successful - but only one is going to do it.

It'd be all well and good if Demetrius just flat out admitted he didn't want to go back to 135 but his complaining about respect, lack of viewership for his cards, and low pay have really wore thin considering the crap quality of opponents he has had over the last few years. Meanwhile, he is constantly plugged as a the #1 most skilled fighter in the world when he is totally unwilling to do something that numerous other fighters have done in recent years over much bigger gaps in weight (Rich Franklin, Jake Shields, BJ Penn, Randy Couture, Dan Henderson, Vitor Belfort, Anderson Silva, GSP, Conor, Nate Diaz, DC, MAX HOLLOWAY, Urijah Faber, Robert Whittaker, etc have all gone up to take fights at higher weight classes). He can't have it both ways: if he wants respect and to be paid more, he needs to fight someone that fans would be interested to see him fight. If he's going to fish around the top 15 looking for opponents while his hype train continues...yeah... forgive me if I'm not impressed.

I think both Demetrius and flyweight would both benefit if he at least tested the waters against someone at 135 once in a while and let some sort of legitimate flyweight contender emerge. Before defenders leap to say "He's fought at 135 many times in the past!!!" yeah... he did... over 6 years ago. He has not gone back up at all after totally cleaning out 125 (and then some) so refusing to go back to a division he was also successful in is pretty hard to defend when Ray Borg is your most recent opponent at 125. I think he would be successful at 135 again as well so I don't know why his fans are so against it. Thoughts?

I've got no issue with DJ, though I wouldn't say I'm a fan either. Your points are valid, though I do think DJ takes a lot of unnecessarily vitriolic criticism because he's a natural flyweight.

Bottom line - I can't fault the guy for wanting to dominate his division, break records, etc., but I'm not shelling out $60 for a PPV he's headlining against yet another average fighter he's going to maul for 25min straight either.

He needs to get busy or people are going to have a real reason to be pissed off

Bantamweight doesn't sell either, should they move up to Featherweight? Your logic could use some work.

UFC would make more money with a dwarf division. Using the argument that true fans of mma will not discern between a little guy weight class and heavy weight class. DJ is technically an upper level dwarf. If he fought a legit dwarf with mma skill, it would sell. The circus atmosphere of the fight alone would attract many fans.

Demetrious Johnson is an exceptionally skilled fighter. There aren't enough of those imo.

You're completely right. His division isn't developed enough to give him dangerous enough fights where he can show how truly skilled he is. No one wants to see a pro beat up on amateur level fighters, and DJ is miles above any No.1 contender in his division. Fighting is boring without the possibility of losing, and DJ obviously doesn't want to challenge himself.

I don't want to pay to see him beat up another mediocre fighter. I want to see him in a fight he has potential to lose. That way if he wins, it was a well earned win.

na I enjoy watching him fight, and he is now acting more himself in interviews and he is pretty funny. I just want to see the fight with TJ..... so Im a bit gutted they cant seem to get that deal done

still a fan though, the dude worked his ass of to be recognised as one of the GOATs

I like DJ but since he denied the Dillashaw fight I lost a little respect. It's not even like it was a catch weight he was going down to his division. Saying that he needed him to fight once there to prove he can make it seems like a weak excuse for not taking the fight. Then changing it to be about money. There's nothing left for him in his division. Reminds me of GSP except it would be like if Anderson was willing to cut to his division and GSP still ducking.

^That^

I can't stand the guy either. He doesn't impress me at all. What he did against Borg had all the media attention and won sub of the year lol. Everyone already knew Borg was a waste of a title fight. How was that so impressive?

I have seen him get criticized just for being small but that was by an irrationally hateful minority of fans. However, his die hard fans will have you believe everyone who doesn't like him fits into that category which is another extreme. I think there is a healthy medium and you seem to fit into that.

For me personally, I feel that after the Ali Bagautinov fight (when Chris Cariaso became next in line) was when I felt he had effectively cleaned out the division and could have taken a fight against a top 10 bantamweight. Considering that was 4 years ago and every fight since then was pretty unnecessary, I think it is fair to be critical

The division isn't deep enough; they should merge 125 and 135 to 130 and let them fight at 130 or move up imo.

his competition is stronger than before but dj improve faster than the rest of the division. he is not like aldo or silva who didn't improve at all during their reign.

I don't think he is afraid at all. IMO he just wants to get paid. He wanted a guarantue that he gets his money even when TJ doesn't make weight - to this day I don't understand why the UFC didn't accept that.

Very few think negatively about him.

Even if someone isn't a fan of the smaller weight classes, it's a generality and not a knock on DJ.

He's fighting in a weight class that he cleaned out years ago, has done it twice since and is now defending against anyone that enters the top 10 fringe.

He would generate more interest had he done something like stepped in to fight Khabib

I only watch DJ with a sort of clinical appreciation at most. That's a far cry from what made me a fan of the sport. I just never get hyped about his fights. Of course, I got hyped about Tony/Khabib and look where that got me.

Dana White called off the fight to punish Dillashaw. People claiming it's Johnson's fault <Lmaoo>.

Wrong.

It's been like that for MM long before the idea of moving up came up.

A lot of people have already flat out admitted that they can't get excited for him because he's a little guy. Why do you think the term "manlet" gets tossed around so much here? Some people can't get over the fact that he's little.

Johnson called out Cruz in 2016, but his detractors conveniently forget that little fact (or weren't aware of it in the first place).
