Laundry list of excuses once he started losing in the ufc. The ducking of chuck episode. He says a lot of stupid shit. And his anti mask stuff near the start of covid certainly didn't help his image. Oh and his 3rd fight of chuck also made him a pretty big villain.

To his credit, he was one of the key fighters in popularizing MMA to the western audience, I have also heard he is really good to his fans and at his peak was a very good fighter, in his prime never really got his ass kicked outside of Chuck & Randy.

For me it was his refusal to fight Chuck.
I think there is sometimes an overplayed narrative of champions ducking certain contenders. IMO, the actual instances of this are few and far between. This is because in order to achieve a level of success like winning a UFC belt you have to be self confident almost to the point of delusion. I think the term “ducking” is thrown around too much when it comes to fighters, and especially champions. It doesn’t matter if you on Sherdog believe that champion A will lose to contender B, most champions believe they can beat anyone.
Having said that, I think Tito is a glaring exception to this rule. His whole bit of waffling on the fight with Chuck and saying they were best buds was so cringeworthy I really couldn’t stand him after that.
Oh yeah, and then he compared himself to Ali in the post fight press conference after losing to Randy

I met him at one of the old UFC events years ago and he was actually really nice. I think he's tried really hard to manufacture a persona (kind of the Chael Sonnen thing) but simply doesn't have the personality to pull it off.
He also gets props in my book by all accounts by being a great dad in an absolute shit storm of a relationship.
Circa 1999 that dude seemed unstoppable, before that he was doing real good vs frank shamrock before he gassed.
One of the dream fights for a while was Tito vs Saku crossover match.
He did more than most and kept the ufc interesting around a time where it was still looking like an illegal fight club.
