Why is small joint manipulation illegal?

There's a Steven Seagal thread going on, which brings up Aikido, which specializes in small joint manipulation.

I always wondered but never asked anyone, why is it illegal? Lots of brutal subs are legal. Nut shots and eye pokes are illegal because the general public has a distaste for them. Soccer kicks and stomps due to politicians. That's reasonable.

But 12-6 elbows are illegal due to the totally idiotic reason of someone in the commission seeing a guy break a lot of ice with them.

So I don't know if small joint manipulation is illegal for a reasonable reason, or a stupid one. I can't think of any reason a wrist lock or something should be illegal.

A wrist lock isn't illegal. Small joint manipulation is pretty much breaking fingers and breaking toes. They snap too fast that you can't tap in time.

This. You can be seriously injured so quickly a fighter wouldn't have a chance to submit until after serious damage already occurred.

Cause it's lame and cringey!

Because the strength and effort needed to cause substantial damage is small.

Would make for bad tv, bro.

For entertainment sake. Pretty much every fight that went to the ground would end with a broken finger within a minute.

It isn't usually enough to end fights but it is enough to sideline fighters for months

Because otherwise Krav Maga masters with deadly joint manipulation skills would dominate the UFC.

I don't think it's nearly as easy to break a finge or something like that if both fighters ar elooking out for it as most people think. And even if it happens it would be much less dangerous than a shoulder or knee injury which are the outcome of legal submissions

Why would it end? Fighters often break a finger or even their hand in fights.

Was small joint manipulation legal in the human cockfighting days?

Wrist locks, toe and finger holds are perfectly legal as long as you put pressure on four toes/fingers at the same time. What's banned is taking a finger and breaking it like a twig.

Every leg lock attempt would end in one person breaking the others toes to either get out of the position or finish the job easier.

Imagine going in for a takedown and your opponent yanks your index finger off of your hand.. You'd be pretty pissed and I'm positive it wouldn't be a televised event

Seems like Nick Diaz would be the ideal candidate to discuss this in depth.

Obviously uve never been in a serious fight. Its very easy to break (and maybe even break off honestly although ive never tried it) fingers while in close combat

nut shots and eye pokes are not illegal because the public has a distaste for them, they're illegal because any unskilled retard can do it and you can very easily cause horrific long term damage or kill a guy if you hit him hard enough in the balls

I can personally attest to that.
