A straw is heavier then a feather aswell.
Not barnyard straw.

Why isn't middleweight the middle weight?

Great post.
Don't know about boxing, but the first MMA weight classes (in the UFC at least) were:
Heavyweight: 200lbs+
Middleweight: 171-199lbs
Lightweight: 170lbs and below.
So once upon a time Middleweight was indeed the middle weight.
Not barnyard straw.

can anyone explain what "cruiserweight" comes from?
Cruisers were the second largest of the WW era ship classes. cruiser originally meant light-heavyweight - second largest. It is catchy and matches the spirit of combat sports.
as they split divisions further, they just smooshed in LHW as well, leaving cruiser in there
That's a misleading statistic when comparing it to fighting though because that counts for a hell of a lot of people who are overweight compared to fighters.interesting, I didn't know that. i always thought it went pretty much open - boxing type classes over the space of a couple of events. Wasn't around for the early days though.
Also of interest - the 185lb weight is very close to the 50th percentile (mean weight) of US males as it currently stands. so it really is the middle weight, in terms of overall population.
good shit. You are wise beyond your belt color.

I know dude I just stated its misleading that's allyeh of course, its literally meaningless, it also includes kids and babies and old people shit. It is just an interesting coincidence.
Why is a square called a ring?

i waited years before actually signing up because there is so much bullshit on this forum lol. Lots of excellent stuff and knowledge as well, but man wading thru the BS is heavy work sometimes, espeically immediately before and after events. Not sure if I'm regretting actually signing up and bothering to post and i might go back to lurkin
