Why has Colby fought so infrequently throughout his career?

Damage. Fighting does damage. His goal is money and less damage.
But it's hard to get better at fighting if you never fight. Even Floyd Mayweather was more active than Colby in his prime.

I get that this is prize fighting but fighting is still part of it.

I suspect ATT kicking Colby out hurt him alot. Like he had a hard time adjusting to that. Guy was reasonably active before that

He was not exactly the "anyone, any time, anywhere" kind of fighter. Waited to make low risk/high reward moves. It kinda worked for him as long as Dana liked him but ultimately he couldn't capitalize on his title shots.

It wasn't really throughout his career. He had 10 fights in just over 3 1/2 years to win the interim title, needed nasal surgery and was out for 9 months and fought Lawler then fought Usman 4 months later. He got less active after because he was already at the top of the division and took a fight to keep his place then rematch. Usman's defenses besides Colby were 2 fights with Masvidal and a fight with Burns, so it wasn't like WW was loaded with a bunch of up and coming guys who were going to take his spot.

I'm sure some of it was also going from being at ATT training full time with guys pushing him and keeping a regular schedule, to pretty much setting up his own camps in a smaller place. Way easier to take it easy when you've made a lot of money and already fought the champ twice with almost chance of a 3rd fight with the same champ.

He became more selective as his name got bigger. Not that different from most guys. He also got a major injury at an old age that kept him out.
Not that different from most guys ? What other prospect is as inactive as him ? The dude has fought once per year

Not sure but he is more entertaining with 5 rounds.

If he is losing after 2 rounds you rather give him 3 more rounds for drama because wtf he is going to do if he cant win decision?

You can have few 5 round dog-fights until you are fucked.

Prospect? He's middle aged. Most big names fight less frequently than when they are younger - that's all I said. I didn't say that he doesn't do it more than other fighters.

He fights once per year because...he doesn't need to fight anymore than that. Fighting isn't that complex.

He holds out to main event PPVs so he can get PPV points. He is not a champion or former champ, so his chances to get them aren't that frequent.

The only reason why he headlined the last card of the year is because he lost leverage and can't get PPV points anymore (there's no reason for him to headline or co-main event). Headlining a UFC on ESPN is better than just being an undercard guy on a PPV.

So in short, money.

Not really, he lost every meaningful fight he had outside of the one against RDA
He's 0-3 in undisputed title fights
That's probably the best he could have hoped to accomplish. Had he fought more frequently and been willing to face top competition he'd have more Ls on his record. He gamed the system, jumped on the MAGA train, and got 3 opportunities to become a champion.

Now compare him to Belal, that dude had to fight tooth and nail and go on an insane winning streak in order to get just a single title fight. Colby got three, two of them being completely unearned. I'd say he's made the most out of his opportunities.

When he was at the top(well top level contender) he wanted to avoid losing to anyone but champions to try and stay there as long as possible.

Instead of having to rebuild after a loss he just vanished for awhile then started with the trolling to hype himself up again.

I disagree that WW hasn’t had many up and comers, in fact I’d say there’s been quite a few. Shavkat, Garry, JDM, Brady, Khamzat when he was at WW (who they tried to match Colby up with) and I’m sure I’m missing one or two more.

Colby's first fight with Usman was in 2019 and the rematch 2021. Those guys weren't even in the UFC for the first fight, and hadn't beaten anybody by the 2nd fight either. The top guys at the time were Usman, Woodley, Wonderboy, Jorge, Burns and Leon who took almost 2 years off during covid, and I think RDA and Chiesa were actually still top 10 . Khamzat had some hype after a couple fights, but then almost died or almost retired or whatever the hell that was and was out for over a year and came back and fought outside the top 10 Leech when Colby already had his next Usman fight signed.

The Usman rematch was over three years ago, why has it taken him till just this past weekend to fight an up a comer? It would have made sense for him to fight any one of the guys I mentioned over the last two years or so but he was never in the conversation, mostly because everyone knew he wouldn’t take the fights as he sat there waiting for undeserved opportunities while calling out guys like Poirier and Wonderboy. And if you recall, Dana was adamant about making Khamzat vs Colby after Khamzat beat Burns but we never heard a peep from Colby, then out of the blue Nate vs Khamzat was announced.

Let’s not try and spin Colby’s inactivity into there not being anyone to fight, there were plenty of options, he just only wanted old guys and title shots.

Colby hasn't been the same since suffering the vicious assault on the streets from Masvidal and the Neik boys which left him in critical condition and on life support for a long time

Colby was still trying to take his first few steps and attempting to talk leading into the Leon fight which resulted in a bad performance

Taking a very short notice fight against a Full Camp Buckley didn't help either which Buckley with the result of a full camp was teeing off with hard strikes on a very short notice Colby in the 1st few rounds

However Colby was starting to take over his top control in the 3rd when he got the takedown and was making Buckley fade as the lactic acid in his beach muscles was starting to gas him out

But the woke liberal Refs and doctor in Tampa gave Buckley the win as they are still angry that Trump won, Colby didn't actually lose

Colby deserves a full camp for his next fight after the tyranny and injustice he has gone through
