I don't think I've ever seen them use ankle locks in the UFC. I mean, they hardly use many leg submissions at all. Overeem attempted a heel hook the other day, which was rare. I understand most of the times they will be in positions where things like RNCs are easier to get, but why not use ankle locks the times they get their opponents' legs?

A level ankles bruh, you'll get punched a lot

And this is what sucks about the UFC’s fighters. No one really can execute bad ass submissions anymore or specializes in certain techniques anymore. Palhares was the last in the ankle/leg locks. Everyone is just good enough on the feet and on the ground to get by. Not everyone but majority.

With both hands on the ankles you can't defend strikes and if it fails you end up on the bottom getting pounded. That being said, I don't feel like they're that uncommon.

Theres a dude on the TUF series who has something like 4 fights and 4 ankle locks wins..

He said theyre under used

We have Oleynik (sp).

Sweat and bareskin makes locking them up a bitch and a half. It takes more skill than most fighters have to pull them off. Getting punched in the face doesn't make it any easier. Plus they tend to be pretty situational. Lots of factors go into it.

Screw ankles. Why doesn't anybody work the body anymore? It's head hunt or leg kick mma

They are rare. Because "BJJ" is a completely different sport than "MMA".

And BJJ is even less effective in an actual street fight.

Don't drink the Gracie Kool-Aid

Locks dont work because a lot of the ankles are on PED's

Didn’t Mir tap Tank with an ankle lock back in the day?

Well, if it is one on one and no idiot to jump in, I will have to disagree.
Seen it once live in the hood. Guy was a proper “street fighter” and was destroyed by this guy.

At that point, Milan didnt know a proper jab.

John danaher and his team are revolutionizing leg locks in bjj so maybe they will make their way over to mma eventually. A problem is that you lose position easily going for them but leg locks are the best small man technique imo because it's hard to just power out of them

Ken Shamrock entered the WWE and destroyed everybody with that move!

Leg locks are coming. Just wait and see.

Unless you are an actual leglock specialist, the only thing that is going to happen is getting punched in the face and losing position.

It's a very specialized move that requires perfect position to pull off quickly. Ryan Hall has pullled it off a few times. You have to be very quick and accurate to do it in MMA, and most mma fighters, even if they are skilled BJJ players, have not put in the time to be skilled at it.

It'll be interesting to see if Gary Tonon brings this skill to mma. He's one of the best in the world.

That was Marcin Held's thing but it doesn't work against high level fighters and usually results in losing position and getting outgrappled. Which is how he has lost most of his fights.
