Why doesn't UFC strip Jones of the title like they did Jiri and Hill when they got injured?

This isn't exactly unprecedented. I don't recall how long Cain was out, but it was a long time, and I don't believe he was ever stripped.

He should have done better killing that :eek::eek::eek:.
Cain was never stripped, the only time I can remember a champ being stripped due to being injured was Cruz, but I think the UFC waited like 2 years at least to do that, imo if you can't defend in a year's time, you should be stripped

Jones will be out at least a year. UFC bending over backwards for Jones again. Jon wants to get the full benefits of USADA being out starting the first of the year and then have his "legacy fight" against old man Stipe so he can ride off into the sunset with everyone sucking him off as "the GOAT" of MMA.
The same reason McGregor wasn't stripped of the Featherweight title, despite losing against a Lightweight, until he became the "champ champ".

If they strip him then he just retires. Jon Jones wants to have one more fight before retiring. The UFC either plays ball with him or don't get that fight. Jon's return was a big sell for the company. There aren't many stars nowadays. Their next biggest star was Izzy and he just went on extended vacation.

we all know that Pavlo vs Aspinall is for the real belt.

Ufc still wants Jones/Stipe with a title on the line to main event a big ppv. Not that hard to figure out. If they stripped Jones, they’d ruin a lot of the hype for the fight.

Bullshit.

No one is buying Jones/Stipe because of a title being on the line. They are buying it because it’s a legacy fight between two greats. The belt adds exponentially less to that fight than it does to Aspinall/Pavlovich where it would cement their legitimacy.

The idea that they are going to shit all over their build up of future stars at HW by openly admitting that offering the interim title shot would be disrespectful to a real contender is fucking insane to me.

Not to mention, there is no guarantee the Jones/Stipe fight even happens now.

This shit makes absolutely no sense whatsoever.

When was the last ufc ppv with a headliner that had no title on the line?

Poirier Gaethje 2 a few months ago?

edit- forgot that was for the "BMF" title lol, but that title actually makes more sense for Jones/Stipe than the HW title does.

I agree Jones/Stipe for the title makes no sense when both are going to retire afterwards, but the ufc wants to rebook that fight as a main event and they need a title on the line for it

Then I feel like they should make them a BMF title fight when they get back.

I thought that was the whole point of the BMF title - when you need a fake belt on the line to sell tix lol.

This is a good point. Back in the day the UFC when a champ got hurt they'd give the interim belt to someone else but would wait for the lineal champ to come back a while before stripping them with the idea being you could use the champs inactivity and the interim champs defenses to hype a unification bout.

At some point in the 2010s the UFC changed course on this entirely and started getting trigger happy with stripping belts both normal and interim because this allows them to give out more belts and have more title fights. If a champ is injured long enough to miss their next planned title fight they strip him and if the same is true of an interim champ they'll strip them too.

Assuming Jones wants to fight again I don't think Jones's is going to keep him out long enough to hold up any fights they want to do. And if they have to stall a little he's the undefeated GOAT whose about to retire. Jiri and Hill had just become champ.

because they CHOSE to vacate to not hold up the division. dummy lol
<{nope}><{nope}><{nope}>

I can only think of twice the UFC has ever stripped a title, imo it would be way more weird for them to strip Jones here than letting him keep the title till he's back

1. Cruz at BW due to injuries that kept him out for 2+ years. Barao defended the interiem several times
2. Colby got stripped of the interiem title for turning down the unification bout with Woodley resulting in Twood and Till fighting

perhaps it’s been said already, but ufc has a stake in jones’s legacy as “goat” because he fought almost his whole career in ufc. for him to retire in the octagon solidifies ufc as the home of the the best fighter in the world. as cain says, jones is likely “the best you’re ever gonna see”—a true generational talent. that’s good for ufc’s brand.

it wasn’t always this way. in the past, people would look up “the best fighter in the world,” and they’d see a guy named “fedor” who fought in pride, affliction, rings, strikeforce, but not ufc. people tend to forget that era, but it was very problematic for ufc’s brand that the consensus p4p #1 fought elsewhere. well, this puts that problem to bed forever. best of all, ufc won’t have to actually deal with jones anymore.
