Why do they always make the fighters hug their teammates/coaches before stepping in the octagon??

because the aren't allowed to touch their team after the ref inspects them so they remind them to do the huggsies before
This guy has it. They aren't supposed to make contact with anyone after the cutman.ref puts on vaseline, and checks them for anything illegal. It's like a "touch gloves now if you want to" during the prefight staredown in the cage.

TS was keep in a hole in his parent's basement when he was a child and feed with a stick. His only source of affection was a pee stained blanket.
If you wanna go ahead and try to be an asshole, atleast be good at it lol

It's not that the ref/cut man is saying they "have" to hug their coaches and teammates, it's that they're not allowed to do so after the vaseline is applied and the glove/cup/mouthpiece check is done.
Yeah this makes sense. Cant believe i didn't think of it before. Thanks.

It's not forced, the cut man is usually telling them that if they wanna do it to do it before the Vaseline. Cuz they check the fighter for grease and all that cheating stuff, if they let the fighter embrace the people in his corner after that they can put something on his body. think about it like going through a checkpoint, once you go through you can't go back.

oh no one gave the actual answer yet lol.

It happened after GSP corner put Vaseline on him after the ref checked him against BJ Penn. Now you gotta part with your Corner first, so the ref can check you after and make sure you don't get extra Vaseline on you or anything.

Not complaining. Just curious why? Some fighters (who's in the zone or whathever) don't wanna do it. The cutman who does the vaseline stuff still makes them do it.

Perhaps a stupid question, but why is it so important?

competing in a combat sport is a nerve wracking and emotional, exciting experience and there is a sense of closeness between the fighter and the camp as he or she steps into the ring/cage/mat.

a lot is on the line. all the hours spent training with your team and it all comes down to the moment. so there's a sense of a united front and spirit.

Hugs before fights, touchbutts, BJJ, Kisses during weigh-ins, GSP's Vaseline, Anderson Silva's voice...MMA is so gay !

GSP's grease-gate brought about some common sense changes, namely that corners could no longer have or apply vaseline.

The current makes the most sense - once you are inspected and vaseline applied by the cutman, you can no longer go back to interact with your team. If you want to do well-wishing, it has to be before the officials start their on board process.

Can someone explain to me the avs with the circles and arrows that sveral posters have, like you TS.

Are you in a cult or is this something less mysterious?
