Why do so many restaurants give away free bread?

I kow of a good Mexican restaurant that not only gives you free chips and salsa...they also give you free dessert. The free dessert is some type of warm bananana with caramel iirc.

Chips and salsa aren't as filling as baked bread though. The Mexican joint I go to always gives you a friend tortilla covered on sugar cinnamon and whipped cream
