Why do so many of you....

You’re only worth what someone is willing to pay you… except the WNBA. Those chicks make waaay too much money.
Sure and some of these guys had to sit out and fight with the ufc over money to gety what they wanted.

I am sympathetic to what you are saying, but most fighters, period, end up broke. Part of it is because they were ripped off, or they are poor managers of money. The person who broke this cycle in boxing was Muhammed Ali. Before that, people who made it was because they started a business, like Dempsey. Jack Johnson, one of the most underrated boxers of the modern error retired when he was 53, because he was poor.

Most fighters, however, never made much money.

People on Sherdog do not realize that fighters, even the low scale ones, make more money than the majority of fighters. Most fighters cannot make a living doing what they love. What Rocky went through is what the life of most fighters, historically.

WHY DO SO MANY OF YOU . . . HAVE TAKES THAT INTENTIONALLY LACK ALL NUANCE?

if this isn't about Francis then who is it about?

All sorts of scenarios:

Dustin fighting Conor instead of fighting Charles for the belt. Woodley sitting out for his guaranteed shot. Edwards doing the same. Jones asking for more money to go to hw. Any time a champ expresses an opinion about the next contender. Any time a contender tries to find the shortest route to a title shot etc.

Sure a lot of athletes aren't great with money. Coming into millions of dollars in your 20's would be too much for a lot of people. If they got a fair split and ended up broke anyway that would be different. But we know they aren't getting a fair split. In some rare cases they can play hardball with the ufc when they get enough leverage.

But it seems like a lot of people get mad at the fighters over being "divas" Instead of blaming the ufc for forcing guys to do this if they want to get paid.

Seem to want fighters to handle their career the absolute dumbest way possible? Any time a fighter gets some leverage and tries to use it to get more lucrative fights, people get all pissy on here. You guys get that the fight for a ham sandwich days are over right? This isn't the 90's or early 00's anymore.

Fighters these days have a lot more info to work with. Like the fact that most of the company man type fighters that just shut up and fought anyone, anytime ended up broke. With "fans" shitting on them as they end up fighting in second rate leagues as a punching bag. Because they're broke. From exhibiting the bullshit "warrior spirit" you guys claim you love so much.

So OF COURSE once these guys put in years of work being underpaid, they want to try to maximize their opportunities with what time they have left. If you want to blame someone, why don't you blame the ufc for lowballing guys relentlessly until they have the leverage to sit out and play hardball with them.

Give a example?

because we dont care about fighters, we care about FIGHTS!

if a fighter making more money means i dont get to see a fight that I want then Im the loser. I dont get a percentage of a fighters purse so I dont give a shit what he makes. That's what a manager is for. I just want to see the FIGHTS that I want to see.

i think the thing that people didn't like is it was giving Conor the chance to sneak into another title shot. Edwards didn't sit out though, he kept fighting even when he said he was going to sit. Jones asking for more money i can see why people didn't like it because the UFC had already helped him out so much it's really ridiculous. if the UFC wasn't so lenient on him he would be assaulting people on the streets for money to support his cocaine habit.

the other thing is fans don't care about fighters. even the ones who pretend they do. fans care about FIGHTS.

IDGAF about fighter pay. Really. I don't. There are many an organization that come to contract agreements.

The fighters are adults. If they don't like it, find a way to make more money, or find something else.
Bitching about it on this site is hilarious. Donate the PPV amount to your fighters next time you stream.

Because they're dumb

If you're a human of even modest intelligence, you fully understand the points made in this thread.

But people don't. That's why you're only as good as your last game.

No matter the sport.

Obviously that's not the truth, but it's a testament to how the vast majority think.

I think the majority of people are indifferent to it either way

I don't hate on the fighter, the fighter, for the most part, will always do what is in their best interest.

The match makers are the ones that allow it, and consistently pass up dudes on long win streaks for title shots and give them to unproven commodities like Colby and Dustin Poirier (as much as I like the latter).

Selling out for something that doesn't even guarantee a return sends the wrong message to the rest of your "contractors".

I just want fun fights, don't really give a shit about anything else.

Although i full heartily agree its the UFC's fault why some fighters choose to do this.. it also comes down to a game of numbers at the end of the day ..

Fighting 3 times for less is better then fighting once and sitting ...in one calendar year...all together guys are fighting less and less and thats not right... iMO dudes should be fighting more frequently so they keep winning and upgrading there contracts... And keep the cash flow up

Nobody should be fighting for peanuts ( UFC should be paying more) and nobody should be sitting out IMO in this day and age...( Theres money to be made but you cant make it if you dont fight..it doesnt always have to be a money fight)

It's like this with other sports as well. These types of "fans" view the fighters as objects. They feel they own these athletes through promoters/organizations/team ownership/league presidents..

I blame my mom smoking and drinking while she was pregnant.

They offered him 8 million to fight Jones and he turned it down thinking he was worth 20. He made his own bed. It's not the UFC's fault that no promotion is agreeing to his ridiculous demands now. Deal with it.
<WellThere>

Not wanting to see your favorite fighters fight tourney style every night with the last man standing is not being a fan of the sport

I just hope it all works out for Francis, and it doesn't turn out to have been a huge mistake. It was a lot of money to walk away from, and I really hope the guy is able to succeed and set some kind of precedent for others that are/were in similar situations.

I'm an MMA fan, not a fighter advocate. I want the fights that will be the highest skill and the most entertaining. Everything else is secondary

Yeah, I agree with that. I do think Francis was being a diva, but the UFC announcing they would not match options per the contract that they make people sign, really screwed Francis over in his ability to negotiate. Cheers.
