Why do Muay Thai fighters wear Anklets? How did this tradition start?
For me, they absorb sweat and remind me to get up on my toes.
Is that the reason others use them?

I wear one one my left ankle because I have rolled it badly (3rd degree sprain) in the past. So it is for support purposes while standing on one leg. As far as if it is a tradition and when it started, I don't know. All I know is that at 34 years old, I don't heal as fast as I used to!

How does decorative ankle jewlery absorb sweat?

Oh, you mean ankle supports.

Okay; jokes aside, you are definitely wearing supports for the wrong reasons. Absorbing sweat?? Really??

I'm a bit of a pansy - I wear them because sometimes my technique gets sloppy and my foot slaps against the thai pad.

(and yeah - in your 30s you want all the support you can get)

Okay, more than likely you're talking about ankle supports. They're worn to give support to the ankle (crazy right?):icon_chee No, they're not intended to absorb sweat and reduce slipping, infact I think they often make it worse. The only other thing you could possibly be thinking of is the PRAJIED and it's not worn around the ankle but the upper arm; it's a buddhist charm/prayer that's meant to protect the fighter against danger, as does the MONG KON which is a prayer scroll worn around the head.

They are for support. Parts of your body where there are a lot of bones, or where several bones/joints connect are susceptible to injury when impacted. Athletes use things like taping or braces to reinforce those joints for greater support. This is why some athletes wear knee braces, why boxers tape their hands, and why kickboxers wear ankle braces.

Oh, you mean ankle supports.

Uhhhh..... google "Muay Thai Anklet" 3,500 hits. I can assure you that i did not post them all.

"You are using them for the wrong reason."
How can you determine why i should use them?
When sweat is running down my leg, it goes into the fabric instead of onto my foot thereby absorbing sweat. When there is sweat already on the ball of my foot, I wipe it off onto the other foots "anklet" or "ankle support".
They also make my flatfooted stance more slip prone thereby reminding me to get up on my toes.

They never felt like they would protect squat under impact from a kick or a misplaced step. Kinda' like a headband as headgear.:icon_lol:

Thanks to those who sincerely tried to answer my question.

As mentioned above, I'm pretty sure you mean ankle supports. They help prevent you from rolling your ankle, which I did once while playing basketball. I ended up with a cast on my leg for a couple months.

Never got used to wearing ankle supports for muay thai though, it felt like they restricted my range of motion or something.

Actually, if you Google "muay thai anklet" -- in quotes, as searching for the phrase without quotes will return every page that includes those three words, regardless of their placement -- it only returns 11 "unique" hits. When you're done, Google "muay thai ankle support" and it'll return about 17,500. An "anklet" is jewlery worn on the ankle. Since Googling things is clearly your sole means of determining their authenticity, feel free to Google that one; the first hit is the Wikipedia entry for ankle jewlery.

Ankle supports are to support your ankles. Your specific uses for them are mind-boggling in their inanity.

I also suggest you learn how to properly search on Google.

I tape my ankes for fights and wrap them (old style) for training, I do this to keep my foot from hyperextending as much if i missjudge a kick and smack em with my foot

Gotobread,

A) All my google search determined was that they are referred to as such, as well.

B) Many people at my gym refer to them as such, as do several people who sell them.

C) Did you know that some words are used for more than one thing?

D) If you know what I mean, why be a dick instead of being helpful?

E) Most sports practitioners could use ankle support, but in Muay Thai, I see them used more than any other sport. I simply wondered why.

F) I don't personally find them to be that effective in protecting my ankles. Use them as you wish.

Ifight4beer,
Thank you for your answer. For support, It makes more sense to me when using tape.

They're used for support for your ankles. I've never had sweat be an issue for me unless it's the other guy's sweat and i did a push kick on them.

Have you tried the ankle supports as opposed to wrapping them? I assume by wrapping them you mean with an Ace Bandage type of thing? If you have tried both, which do you prefer?

When you kick your shin on a bag over and over again, you have to remember that your foot is flopping around on the end of it. Eventually if you keep kicking with that shin, you could damage the tendants and joints that connect your foot to your shin.

It does have other benefits such as bracing for bad landings and some could argue grip? (personally i dont think it helps with grip depending on the surface of the ground. But as far as i have been told they serve better for joints when kicking. Just like hand wraps spreading the impact of punches round the knuckles and wrist.

They can also look cool as shit with some proper colour coordination ;)
