Why Do Injuries Seem to Occur More Often Now?

since losing a fight could derail a career, guys back out if they aren't confident in their camp

There's more fighters in the UFC than ever ... there will be more injuries than ever ...

The prominence of MMA as a sport has exploded in the past few years, this is the driving factor in the injury rate we are seeing now as opposed to 10 years ago. The stakes are higher and the competition has increased tremendously in quality, athletes realize the stakes are higher in both star power and dollars so they are also more apt to sit out of fights rather than fight injured as opposed to years past.

PED testing, more money involved in the sport which makes gyms to overtrain fighters, insurance that pays for fighters health care, etc.

The fighters have health insurance now I believe, so they can afford to pull out of fights.

Back then, fight injuried and get paid, or don't fight and don't get paid.

This. We never heard of fighters pulling out of fights prior to 2006 or so.

I think there are greater incidences of injuries because there are simply more events, and subsequently, more fights/fighters.

I wouldn't be surprised that if someone tracked the % of fights cancelled due to injury expressed in terms of the total number of fights taking place, it would be the same (or even less) than before.

why do threads about injuries seeming to occur more often now seem to occur so often now?

More PED testing, overtraining, and more importantly: health insurance. Fighters had to fight injured before because they couldn't afford to pull out of fights. Now, they will pull out for even a slight injury. Really, it's a great thing for fighters but a shitty thing for fans of the sport

Other than PED testing, health insurance. They can now patch themselves up instead of risking further injury.

This gets brought up a lot, even already in this thread. But if I understand it correctly, the insurance just pays the medical bills, not the purse the fighter is set to win etc.

So if the insurance was a major factor, you would expect to see fewer high level guys pulling out of fights than lower level guys. A high level fighter's purse and ppv payout dwarfs the medical bills, right? So insurance is less of a factor for them?

Maybe the US medical bills are so high that that's not true, I don't know.

ped testing, lack of ped use which causes body to not heal rapidly, insurance in case of injury.

A Tank thread in the heavies? Rare like a unicorn :)

Once they added the injury insurance or whatever...drawing a blank. I remember I think 2012 it was. That one year that was just plagued by injuries.

lol i know right

Hmm good point- I didn't think about the whole health insurance issue.

A lot of good points were also brought up in this thread, especially the comments regarding health insurance.

Good information, thanks.
