Why didn't destructible environments catch on?

Deformed and or deteriorating cover creates another problem that can break PvP balance. Game needs to be designed with it in mind explicitly at the beginning of development for it to work.

I mean sure, but i think it makes games much more immersive
 
I had so much fun with the original Red Faction. I didn't like that they brought it back as a third person shooter.
 
Because it's hard, and it's extra hard to sync across a multiplayer game.
 
Because if Kamurocho was destructible, I'd have nowhere to play Outrun...or talk to hostesses...or chill in a cat cafe...
 
BF BC2 was my fav destructible environment. Jez that game was good in its day.

BF BC2 is still to this day my favorite online FPS. I played it all the way to the end of it's life. There's no excuses to say they can produce such an epic world collapsing FPS on a PS3 over a decade ago but now it's "impossible to do". Just laziness.
