Why did you lose interest in MMA?

The fighters have become homogenous. The "MMA style" plays out so similar in a lot of fights that even when I'm watching it all starts to look like the same fights. Add to that the number of fights available and it just becomes a big blur of lackluster fights and not great judging.

This to a degree ^

And the fans around here have helped too. My god you people are insane about some fighters. It gets so fn demoralizing to come on here and see yet another "silva sucks and has fought cans" "weidman sucks and is untried" "jones sucks and has a big ego" "you suck if you like GSP" "Diaz sucks and fuck you" discussion. I get it, you're passionate about "your" fighter. But its fn childish bs and it gets super old super fast.

And this 100% ^

Like the previous poster said, we might get something crazy like Jones vs. Cain in the future, but since that fight will be so big, the co-main event will be Nick Ring vs. somebody. Or on the other hand we'll have a good card and then the main event will be Mighty Mouse or Barao and it's just not as interesting at that point.

The guys we've all followed for years are all either retiring or losing most of their matches. It's tough watching the old school exciting guys deteriorating while the new point system fights are coming up and winning without finishing anyone.

Lastly these guys just don't fight enough. A lot of them fight 1-2 times a year. Especially the champions. You watch Anderson Silva fight and you know it's going to be 6 months at minimum before you see him in the cage again. Before you know it these guys are old and out of their prime and you barely got to see them fight. Or while they're in their prime they don't match them up against other big names. Once the UFC gets keen on the idea, one of the guys has lost his luster and it just doesn't have the same excitement as it once did.

Not to mention another week of "shitty little midgets tainting my pure mma", judging by quite a few comments here.

The more fighters...the more cards...

Problem is, is that a lot of fighters on the UFC roster just arent that good. Meaning just because its a UFC event, does not mean its the best fighters in the world...It is becoming watered down.

I have said this before and I will say it again. The UFC has long been leveled in USA. Which by that I mean, it is not getting more popular in America. I dont care what Dana says or what FX/FOX/etc say either. UFC was at its peak yrs ago. Whe the first few seasons of TUF came out, everyone I knew watched it and a lot of people I knew would come over for PPVs.

Well, those that watched it then, do not watch it now. The fad/trend is over. See in America, the average society follow fads and trends. Yes, UFC is huge now, but it is not growing anymore in USA. Thats why theyre hyping Canada, Brazil, and other countries with it. This card coming up this weekend, which is free somehow...Is better than 1/2 the PPVs this year by far.

Also, many fighters are just scared to lose. And the fights show it. A win is a win, and a loss is a loss I guess, but no one wants to lose a fight. So the fights have become watered down just like most of the cards.

Then you hvae/had all the bashing on other orgs by Dana and his followers. He ragged on Pride, Strikeforce, Bellator, Invicta, etc. Yet he then buys them out and takes their fighters. He says only the best are in the UFC, yet he has no problem taking fighters from the orgs he bashes on.

He couldve made a womens 140 lb class, yet instead chose 135. And now its like Ronda is the new face of UFC, yet she never even defended her belt yet, which was given to her. The hype and spotlight she gets is beyond rediculous. It is amazing what media in USA can do. It can make ANYONE famous. From tv shows to music stars to models etc...It is insane, but thats a whole nother story.

The only people who buy these PPVs anymore are either rich, stupid, or are young with friends to help pay for them. It gives them a reason to get drunk I guess. I dont think I could find anyone to help me pay for a PPV anymore. Even if I supplied the food, they would still be bored with the fights. Because even if you are a long time mma fan, some fights just suck. So those who arent a follower of mma, the fights must really suck...

I still watch most mma orgs and cards, and will continue. I just hate when people start to bash on Bellator and other orgs, just because Dana does, or because it isnt the UFC. Last Bellator event was great, as are most...If a Bellator card was labeled as a UFC card, people would say its a good card. But since it does not say UFC, people say its a joke organization and joke card. Makes no effin sense to me. But that is how plastic, fad/trend followers and fairweather mma fans roll I guess...

Of course I'm not as enthusiastic as in my late teens when this sport was new to me. What I like has changed with time, match-ups between fighters I have watched at least a bit interest me. The difficulty of breaking fights down to get a better understanding of this sport.

The one thing that has made me less of a fan is the fallout of SF and WEC, especially SF which I enjoyed more. Can't get into Bellator, invested too much time to know the SF fighters, and getting to know a new group as well seems both a workload and a waste of time due to UFC likely buying them out when they get to a certain level.

UFC is fine. The cards on average are better than 5-8 years ago, but I do need to know more fighters to get interested.

the depth of elite fighters nowadays throughout all the weight classes is just fucking sick and i love it more than ever. bellators got a fair few great fighters , ufc has obviously got a ton.
honestly i cant understand how many people here on sherdog talk about mma as if they hate it and are forced to watch, its weird lol
i sort of see the "point fighting" argument but at the same time those people like to ignore the guys like, condit , swanson , lauzon , pickett and theres plenty plenty more who are always looking to finish and are taking risks.
i say chill out and stop being so negative , enjoy it

couldn't agree more

My guess is people that lose interest are :

1 - People that like particular fighters more than they like MMA. Their interest wanes when fighters loses or gets older.

2 - People that like only a particular style of fighting. If said style becomes obsolete because the professionnal MMA fighters have found a way to counter it easily, than their interest wanes.

I agree to an extent. That may be a reason people lose interest, but if you think about it, this happens with fans in most every sport. Think of how many basketball fans only watched games that Jordan or Lebron, etc. played in. Fans always choose athletes to pull for, and it impacts their interest in the sport. And as for fighting styles, I know I can watch basketball games and almost always find myself pulling for teams that press and push the pace, and get annoyed with slow, plodding teams that play ugly. Tiger Woods, Mike Tyson, Raphael Nadal, Peyton Manning, Derek Jeter, you get the idea. They all have personas/styles that captivated their respective sports and drew interest. So, it can be beneficial as well

MMA is still my favorite sport. With that said, My top 10 things that I like less about MMA now than before include:
1. Referee stand ups.
2. No strikes to the back of the head and spine.
3. No knees to the head of a grounded opponent.
4. No mandatory title defense timeframe limits.
5. Flyweight and Bantamweight male divisions.
6. No elbows from 12 O'clock to 6 O'clock?
7. UFC monopoly of ranked fighters not making PPV televised cards stacked with ALL HIGHLY RANKED fighters.
8. PED Controversy.
9. Fighter pay debate.
10. Lame fighter excuses after a loss!

Royce Gracie said it: "... There are no more tough guys. Those days are over. You have no business in the ring if you don't train."
