He was one of the best low kickers in the game. Nobody at 135 or 145 even comes close, but as he got farther in his career, he stopped using them as much. Still don't understand why he stopped. It would be like if Cro Cop or Barboza stopped throwing kicks. He still throws one here and there, but it use to be like 50% of his strikes.

I think he permanently messed up his leg in the motorbike crash. Just a theory though. I don't think he has ever come out and given a real answer for why he stopped throwing so many leg kicks. An injury of some kind would make a lot of sense though.

He said in an interview once that he had leg injuries. Same thing happened to Cro Cop

Probably for reasons we don’t know. Maybe they took a lot of energy. Maybe they hurt his legs as well..or he just over indulged on his boxing like so many other MMA fighters do that his leg kicks became an after thought to him.

He hasn’t thrown them for years and it’s so frustrating because you know he could fuck people up so much quicker than with just his boxing.

Gym wars + injuries + motorcycle accident. His longevity is incredibly impressive.

10 years undefeated and still giving good fights against top ranked fighters even though he’s past his prime

He won't come out and say it directly because he doesn't want it in his opponents' heads that they don't have to worry about his kicks but it's 99.9% because of injuries. I'm almost certain he was talking about going into boxing because of it but then he fucked up Stephens and Moicano with just his hands so I suppose he figured he doesn't need his kicks.

But we all know it's just not the same Aldo if he doesn't have his kicks.

Foot injuries I think. The bridge of the foot and smaller bones are most susceptible. He’s probably not training leg kicks as much therefore not using them in fights.

I would guess injuries but only he truly knows. It's depressing because he some of the best leg kicks ever too. War Aldo forever. Top 5 all time imho.

Either injury or it was simply too tiring to do consistently

Didn't he say it was because of a foot injury?

Sucks when fighters like Aldo and Shogun aren't able to use one of their best weapons anymore.

It's crazy how the likes of Yodsanklai haven't got messed up legs.
Heard in an interview that Ramon Dekkers was told to stop throwing kicks as he could lose his leg but he carried on anyway.

Aldo loves to box, when he uses those Stomach shots more matters less

Korean Zombie checked one and he stopped throwing them almost completely.

I’m sure it is something else but I’ve always looked back and thought that was the fight that he stopped throwing them aggressively. I could be wrong though. I usually am.

Generally from what ive seen, people who throw hard leg kicks a lot, over time decline in attempts. I think its injury related most of the time. Hard to kick so hard so often without getting injuries.
