I'll re-type my position for the 3rd time. If we want people to have a voter ID card to vote then the simplest solution is to simply send it to them prior to the election. This way we know that everyone who is eligible to vote will have the necessary identification on time. Maximized identification - isn't that the goal?

But there will be "barriers" regardless. Paperwork will need to be filled, like any other ID. They aren't just going to send them out willy nilly. That's just par for the course. If the ID was free, but you still had to prove who you are to get one, would you be for it?

People already file that paperwork when they register to vote.

And of course it's not willy nilly. The nation already knows who is an American citizen and where they live because people file taxes annually and that information is already disclosed on your return.

I think people don't realize how many different times and ways their identity is verified by the government.

That wasn't your question from the previous post. Your question was " If the ID was free, but you still had to prove who you are to get one, would you be for it?"

TO which my response was - you prove who you are when you register to vote. I should have expanded on that, I guess. If someone has to prove who they are to register to vote, of course I'd be fine with sending them a free ID after that.

Your question in this post about "barrier" - you're going to need to flesh out what barriers you're referring to because if it's just "prove who you are", I've addressed that. I'll do it again here - people prove who they are in multiple ways throughout any given calendar year with the government. Any one of those instances is sufficient to warrant a free ID.

I suspect you're saying to disregard all of those other instances and require people to prove their identity yet again? Before I could agree to that, you'd have to tell me why the other times aren't valid.

For the same reason you can't just tell the government that "I'm Jim from Cleveland" and get an ID of any form sent to you. Paperwork needs to be filled, verification process needs to be done, even if it's the smallest of inconveniences, like telling them your SS number, or any number of simple checks.

But paperwork is already filed when you register to vote. I said that in an earlier post. Why wouldn't that be valid?

Recorded paperwork is not valid in many other avenues, and you must update. Is this a problem when it comes to voter ID? If so, why?

You seem very hesitant to answer this question for some reason. What's the big deal, other than some run of the mill bureaucracy that we deal with everyday?
