Everytime I go to the grocery store and there's even a 30 cent sale on something the shelf is cleared. Last time I went to buy some rice of the brand I usually get and it was all gone and on 'sale' for a dollar. Out of spite I decided to buy the most expensive rice. Why do People do this?

I hear you but my feeling is like leave some for the rest of us. You don't need your 12 rice bags. Save some for the rest of us.
You have NO way of knowing whether 12 families bought one bag each or whether one family bought 12 bags.
Ultimately, what you're complaining about is that the brand you wanted was sold out.

There was a study that nominal discounts(like x.99) sends people brain chemicals that makes them much more likely to buy than a .00 even if its functionally the same. This is why you seldom see something on sale for 10.00 or 20.00.

So if 1-5 cents matters to people(subconciously) 1.00 is going to seem like a huge sale.

You weren't even there man!

Some people are stuck with it mentally. Some grew up poor and famine mentality runs deep. I can't help but look for sales and discounts, no matter the situation.

Like it or not, money is needed to do pretty much anything, so saving some here and there is only in your best interests.

Yeah that makes the most sense. Like that robot from the show 'Reboot' back in the day. 'Only 99.99.99.' I don't know how to post clips yet so you'll have to look it up yourself

I'm always looking to save a buck but I do that by shopping at grocery stores with good value, doing home and car repairs myself, etc....not by buying rice in bulk.

Who the hell are you spiting other than yourself?

It's completely rational to stock up on an imperishable item when it's on sale. It's shortsighted not to.

That's how you become a millionaire. All the people you see driving Mercedes and Lamborghinis are up to their eyeballs in debt.
Most definitely not all but yeah, there are obviously some that take on massive amounts of debt to impress others.

The above thinking is what poor people typically tell themselves to feel better about not having money (not saying that this is the case here).
